Hate to say it, but never mind the Mercedes, I'd take the Hyundai i30N Fastback over this! Which is a shame because I'd been hoping the 2GC would be the answer to my new car desires. I guess the i30N isn't an option in the US though.
Hmmmm Hyundai did poach the head of the BMW M Division to head up their N Performance development... |

Why oh why does BMW insist on creating 4 door and X version of everything. Once the bean counters took over the brand image has deteriorated.
I'm glad I picked up an M2 when I did. |

I’m here laughing my arse off in my armchair looking at idiots who pay 10 grand more for the badge when they can get one from BMW for 40 bucks.

Wow... the interior of this new model is great IMO, but the rest is everything that's wrong with modern BMWs IMO.
No Hoffmeister kink No real kidneys FWD Front looking like it's already been crashed No 50/50 weight Damn... Sad indeed. The forthcoming 4 is not even something I would go for because of the nose design - the new 3 or current 5 might be the last decent looking for a while

Sigh... BMWs designs as of late have me embarrassed to admit that I'm a BMW fan. This looks like you took the worst parts of all the budget sub-compact cars out on the market today and slapped a roundel on it.
I genuinely think the 2019 Corolla looks better than this. Even if you think the Corolla is ugly, it's at least striking to look at. This 2GC is ugly AND bland. |

That is my point. M/AMG buyers choosing their vehicle for its performance shouldn't feel at all threatened. Conversely, I can see those whom purchased their M/AMG because of the badge on the trunk feeling butt hurt because now there's one on a fwd vehicle.

These photos kind of illustrate the overreaction by many in this thread as the 2 series has never been a handsome car. The visual differences between the cars are very minimal and comes down to if you prefer the old front end treatment or the new one. It's an entry level car to compete with Audi and MB FWD based competition and I have no idea why any owner of higher level BMW cars would care about this car or feel that it tarnishes anything.

I think this would have been a good car for the I-division. An electric drivetrain with a 3 cyl would fit this perfectly and extend the market. There is no market for ICE sedans rn, people would rather get into x1,x2, or x3. This is going to fail in the US.

That's a reasonably well crafted piece of work. If the goal was simply to imagine what a 2 Series Coupe built on the FAAR platform could look like, this is a very competent effort.
That said, it is certainly worth remembering that the upcoming 2022 G42 2 Series Coupe will be built on a completely different platform from the new F44 2 Series Gran Coupe, and it will have its own completely distinct styling. What that means is, as far as that car is concerned, any rendering based the F44 accomplishes nothing as far as predicting what it will look like. In fact, I would go as far as to say that, if one wanted to imagine the G42 (and I'm not saying you do, I'm merely covering the case in which someone may) that individual would be much better off starting with a blank slate. Some things to keep in mind would be classic RWD proportions, the very latest BMW styling cues from other RWD BMW products, and, if SCOTT is to be believed, a dash of the 3.0 CSL Hommage (or the 3.0 CSL Hommage R if you are going for something more along the lines of the M Performance model with M Performance parts or the G87 M2). |

This is stupid. They should just perfect the 3. Let the 2 series remain a small coupe..nothing more.

Asked my partner what he thought of it. He likes my 2, but says he'd prefer a 4 door. He liked the front but said the rear looked "squishy". Now that I look more I have to agree. Perhaps they should have made it a hatch, but would that have been too much like the Active Tourer?
It's a shame because I think there was a real desire for a smaller 4 door to take the place of the segment that the 3 used to occupy but has grown out of, both in terms of size and price. With so much attention these days on SUVs / SAVs and away from sedans, I guess it's no surprise they didn't seem to expend a lot of effort on this one. |
