Hidden Menu: Accessing TPMS Data
I thought I had read somewhere that on a Z with Navigation, via one of the hidden menus you could actually view the tire pressure data for each wheel. This would be real handy if/when a TPMS module goes bad to determine which wheel it is.
I searched but couldn't find anything. Does anyone have info on this? Thx. |

I don't think the ///M has TPMS. Mine doesn't.
It uses deltas between the ABS wheel speed sensors to sense when your tire diameter changes. But there are hidden menus to set things like the speed sensitive volume control level and the perspective map.

I believed beginning late '06 or early '07 ///M has TPMS. My '08 definitely has it. Not sure why BMW implemented TPMS if it's not going to give us the readout of the actual values. If all we get is an idiot light, then I would preferred the ABS system due to lower maintenance cost and less complexity.

IIRC they didn't have a choice.
It was regulated in.

Early 07's (and up) were fitted with TPMS. The car does in fact read the actual values of the TPMS, but if you do not have Nav, then there is no place to read the values. If you connect the car to a laptop with INPA software, you can see the actual values (in bar) and watch the change. I do not know if the Nav system will display them.
I am going to assume BMW did not want to make any major changes to the instrument cluster (Kombi) to display these values due to cost, so I am going to assume that Nav will not display the data for the same reason. |

Seems like the kind of thing that would read out below the odometer, if at all, rather than through the nav.

It's crazy that our cars have idiot lights, but lesser brands have actual PSI displays. While I check mine routinely, it would be nice at times to know which wheel is reading low or even high.
On another note, how long do TPMS last before they give out?

Things I have read and things I have talked to people in the know is, that the batteries in the in-wheel sensors have a life span of approx. 10 years.
Is this truth? Unknown.... |

IMHO, the TPMS sensors last longer and fail less than I would expect. These sensors live in a very, very harsh environment. With the amount of shock, vibration, rotational g-forces and temperature, they should fail more than what we all see. Something to keep in mind.....

All the more reason I am glad I don't have the sensors. The ABS based system worked great for me when I had a nail. No rebuilding of the sensor needed with ABS either.

My e46 m3 had the old speed sensor setup and IU much preferred that since you could "teach" it the new pressures and make it go away.... |

I spoke with EAS about a year or so ago and they said they could recode the light off.

I just shelled out $175 for new (aftermarket) sensors. I figure if I'm going through all the hassle to not have an airbag light trip from a race seat, why stop at TPMS lol. At this point it's not even worth buying used sensors on the forums seeing how they're all at least 4 years old or so. May as well go new and buy yourself another 5-7 years.
