Carbon Hood Question

Do you have to use those double hood pins when you install a carbon fiber hood? Are there hoods that don't require them? I'm ready to pull the trigger on a M3 style CF hood and really don't want the pins.

You do not need hood pines but I recommend them.

Our cars only have a single point of connection - our center latch. If the hood cracks or breaks around that point it could fly up. some have also reported their CF hoods lifting at high speed. my revozport hood didnt raise before i put latches on by my vorsteiner did. E9x's have two latches from the factory so don't normally raise like ours can.

If you do opt for latches, get aero catches, they look and function the best .

Aerocatch are the way to go. Not a pic of a BMW, but I used +Flush aerocatch pins on my last car and worked awesome (the locking key was also a nice addition).

I like the flush style the most, but the raised were easier to install with my limited amount of tooling.

My cf hood lifted ALOT. I was always worried it was going to crack. I got cheap locking pins. Not aero catch. I like how it turned out. The best thing about it is no more lifting. Now I'm not worried about doing 90+ mph. Even at highway speeds it would lift a bit.

Here's what mine ended up looking like. I like it. They come with a key to lock them. Other ones looked bigger in pictures.

IMO, the aerocatch definitely look cleaner- they're obviously more expensive. here's a pic of my old z with some aerocatch pins set up (and a fair bit of frost after a cold night).

I did not used them, so far no problems with normal driving, including up to 120mph on freeway. I bought the aero catch pins in case you are interested but was afraid to damage the hood on install

Lift is going to vary per brand - some will lift, some wont. You will not know until you buy and install it

I always ran hood pins on my carbon fiber hoods. Better safe than a smashed windshield and roof
