Brights on as DRL
What exactly causes the brights to turn on as day running lights? I've noticed that sometimes I see my car's reflection in the car in front of me and the brights are on. Other times they are not. Not fully lit just dim like the DRL in my 3 series without angel eyes were like.

Those are just standard DRL settings. You can change it in the computer and access it with the stalk you use to flip through mpg, temperature, and all that.
But I guess you are asking why they are on sometimes and sometimes not... I don't know? I have my DRLs set to off so they are never on. My guess would be that it has something to do with if your headlight switch is set to auto or not. Auto makes all the difference in the world for just about every headlight feature it seems.

Are you talking about the inner headlights? Assuming you have the HID/active headlights option, those lights have many different functions, and are not really the high beams. For example, they turn on when you put the car in reverse, and each one will turn on when you activate the corresponding blinker, or turn the wheel in that particular direction.

When your headlights are in AUTO mode, inside the car's headlights are some IR sensors that can detect when its dark or foggy outside. This in part determines when your car's low beams switch "on" automatically. Also the car's rain sensor will tell the headlights its raining and switch them on when its raining.
