SIB 12 09 12 software update for stalling, idle and surging rocks but theres more...

Could not be happier with this update released in April 2013. Car is totally predictable and linear when accelerating from a stop now. It's too soon for a full a report but I have noticed other things that have now changed from the update as well:

- When hitting my blinker half way for quick lane changes it only blinks once now and before the update, it blinked 3-4 times before self cancelling.

- I now have DRL? Prior to the update when i turned the lites off they were completely off. Now I have angel eyes in the off position.

Does anyone know the full list of things this update accomplishes? Obviously more than just fixing stalling and surging.....

They somehow erased the setting in your turn signal - maybe they did the battery recall? Look in your owner's manual under "personal profile." In my manual (also a 2011), the personal profile is described on page 18 of the primary manual, and it points to page 57 for the turn signal setting.

Those can both be changed in the settings in idrive if you have it or on the dashboard with the stalk.

Those are also settable from the upper left-side stalk on the steering column if you don't have iDrive.

Huh, Thanks guys...I should have thought of that. I kinda like the DRL's.
Are they prone to blowing out like house lite bulbs if left on all the time? I'll turn them back off if it will prolong their life otherwise I'll keep them on..
Do you guys have yours activated??

I had them on all the time but when I made my angel eyes blue I now turn them off depending on where I'm driving. Don't want a ticket.

Question

What is the most effective method to get the techs to make sure the car has the most up to date software?

My car currently fluctuates RPM at idle and is a little unpredictable in drive. I simply stated my issues as they are and I am taking the car in tomorrow for a state inspection.

I'm sure they will eventually burn out, but I have mine on. I think they are much cheaper to replace than the Xenons - I turn those on manually, at night only. And the angels just look so cool...

Just wanted to thank you for posting this, OP. I was having the same issue and when I was in last year I brought it up but the tech "was not able to duplicate this condition." After seeing this post, made an appointment this weekend, told them to do the software update, and the car is running better than ever.

Is there a list somewhere that shows when they switched putting a certain software release on the production line cars? I took delivery around when this SIB came out, but they could have had it in production before. Thoughts?

This SIB is for the N55 135i (valvetronic) single turbo motor. You have a 128i right>?

But to answer your question normally the car's leaving out of the factory have an older SW level than what is available at the dealership. I do not know why that is.

IF you are having idle issues it is best to talk to your local service dept and or tech. Maybe they know of a fix. You can also make a video to give them, that way they know your not making it up.

Today I got my car back and I had the same problem. I saw in the working papers this: SIB 12 09 12. I presume they made the update to my car, and guess what!?! The issue is finally gone!!!!! The car is not jerking anymore, and the revs stopped jumping! Just a slight increase in RPM when I stop, but completely smooth, and then it gets back to normal. Now is more predictable.

At lights it seems like my revs are searching a bit. The car isn't jumping in revs or anything...but just minimal +-500 rpm increases that you can barely see on that tach, but you can feel in the seat

That sounds like a fuel miss to me. IF it were an ignition miss(fire) like coil/spark plugs, the tach would move a little bit. Its probably gummed up injectors. I would try a F.I. cleaner and/or changing brands of fuel.

The SIB is for N55 motors(135i). I do not know what the latest SW version is for the N52/N51. ? Maybe try posting in the 128i section (128i Engine (N52), Exhaust and Drivetrain Modifications).

I recently took my car in for the battery cable recall and some engine hesitation issue.

They mentioned they updated the software...Now my car is much smoother, but much slower. it does NOT pull the same. Butt dyno. I can't break the rear wheels free in first gear anymore. 50 degree temp and A/S tires. The pilot a/s plus would break free in 1st and 2nd before the update

Not happy

I had a friend who had this update and we both can tell they neutered the car.
The car is smoother yes but seems lacking in power now compared to before update.
Compared to my car, mine is so much more responsive and appears to have much more torque earlier on in the power band

I blew a coil on my S54, I know what that sounds and feels like.

I'll have to do some investigating...if not I'll have BMW take initiative and solve it. That's why I got a warranty

Yup, that is indeed what BMW has done. Throttle response sucks but the engine runs much smoother and quieter. Very little fuel injector noise. The added lag is bc the new SW keeps the wastegates open longer and at idle.

The only way to keep the peformance your friend had before is with BMW's PPK2 sw tune or with an aftermarket tune. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Because im not a 'spirited' driver all the time, I dont really notice a difference in performance. I'm much happier having predictable acceleration from a stop as well as no stalling while in traffic now. To me, it was a safety issue for the street. If I were tracking my car, I'd be real upset.
I would really like to see a dyno run between the 2 SW versions to know how much power was lost. No turning back but I'm happier now anyway so it doesnt matter to me.

Suprised you had this hesitation issue to begin with having a 6 mt. I thought this problem only existed with DCT trannies...huh.
