anyone from E60 M5 Manual? vs E90 M3 Manual?
I remember when BMW decided to offer manual tranny for the M5, it wasn't much of a successful story.
I remember reviews being bad for the manual tranny on that particulat V10 motor, and though SMG was pretty sad those days, they still favored SMG over manual. My friend has been searching for the E60 M5 manual recently. He loves the E90 but wants a bigger size, and loves the V10. I offered him to testdrive mine and he loved the manual tranny of E90 M3, but I wonder how much different it is in the E60 M5 manual. Anyone from E60 M5 manual?

I own a manual e60 M5 and a e92 M3..
E60 is the family hauler / weekend car and my e92 is my daily. The m5's clutch and tranny is very very similar in feel. I was pretty surprised.

I do know that the manual equipped USDM E60 M5s were factory-equipped without a traction control-delete option. However, BMW released an updated ECU reflash at the dealer, or experienced coder, giving you the option to disable it on the iDrive.

...except E9x transmission has a transmission cooler with heat exchanger in right front wheel well. The transmission part numbers are different mainly due to the bosses for the cooler lines I suppose.
Note that people who track the E60 M5 with 6MT report limp mode after running it hard for 15 min or so, depending on ambient temperature. They get the message saying the transmission is overheated and get a reduced redline. It's probably bs as these transmissions are very similar to the E39 M5 units which has no overheat sensing, and there have been many E39s putting out huge power and torque, well in excess of the E60, that have been tracked over the years without any tranny problems.

In any event I've driven a manual E60 M5 on a few occasions (I own a 2010 M5 SMG) and manual M3's (used to own one). The M5 MT was definitely standard BMW - secure, a bit notchy between 2 - 3, best driven aggressively, and better than most other manuals although not the very best. In other words ... very similar to the MT box in the M3 (and other prior M's). The real distinction is that the M5 has ten cylinders in front of it. THAT certainly feels different. |

Interesting views. I drive both of these monsters each with a manual transmission and have to say that the M5 shifts smoother than the M3 for some reason. Maybe the M3 needs to be serviced but that's just my experience. I will say though that the M5 is a tank compared to the M3, in my view. Extra space is nice but the handling of the M3 is so much better. Highway cruising - M5, narrow winding roads - M3. It sounds silly but switching from the M3 almost feels like the M5 doesn't have enough power. Love them both but the M3 is better overall, especially in sedan form.

The manual transmission in the E60 M5 feels exactly the same as a E90/E92 M3 6spd, I've driven both. I own the SMG variant and love it! Wanted something different since my daily driver is a manual.
