90,000+ miles on M54, what maintenance stuff should I look into?
I have a 2004 3.0i, it runs ok but it's getting up there in miles. I was wondering what I should do outside of the normal oil change/inspection schedule to keep it running well.
The main issues I have seem to be increased oil consumption, probably a quart every 2,500-4,000 miles and some cold start hesitation. I'm already going to be replacing the VANOS unit soon with one from Dr Vanos (because I don't feel like rebuilding it myself) along with the valve cover gasket and spark plugs. What else should I check or just replace?

That's pretty much it. Oil consumption is the same on my car, maybe slightly more.

What about the CCV? or I also see 'the cooling system' mentioned a few times.

I'm in the same boat with my S54, and car in general. Currently at 89k. Compiling "bucket list" of things I want to replace at the "half-life" of 100-125k.
My oil consumption is about the same. My Wife's truck sucks 3 times as much oil, and runs fine, so I'm not concerned. At the top of my list is anything made of rubber. Especially O-rings. Just replaced my motor mounts with VT. Thought they were fine, but under the heat shield the right side had a huge crack, where you could never see it while installed. Replaced the trans mounts with REs while I was down there. Next will be most rubber suspension bushings, then shocks and mounts, then Vanos O-rings.

For the cooling system, if it ain't broke, don't mess with it... despite what the forums say. The thermostat "can" go bad, but it usually fails in the open condition (so the car takes longer to warm up, versus overheating if it fails in the closed position). You'll want to change the fluids in the diff and transmission, even though they are lifetime fluids. I have 126k miles on my non-M, and 103k miles on my M. They both drive like they're new, other than a few minor quirks, most of which are FI-induced. The major wear items will be in the suspension - shocks and bushings.

Expansion tank , and radiator hoses , upper and lower . It is cheap DIY . Valve cover gaskets, the rubber grommets . The window washer motor these are things that will go out in the 100k mile range . The ignition coils possibly

Don't let any of this discourage you. As he said, cheap DIY that the forum can help you with.
It's not just a car, it's a hobby.

True that , I paid 15 bucks for a window washer motor shipped and installed in 5 minutes . Valve cover gaskets might have taken a hour , you may as well do it when you change the spark plugs .
YouTube is your friend too . These are the easiest cars I have ever seen to work on. David |
