Z4 Headlight Change?

Newbie here -

Just wanted to introduce myself to this Forum. I'm from Toronto, have been a part of maxbimmer since 2002 and always a BMW fanatic. Currently have a 2002 3-Series - Will post some pictures soon, and aquiring a 2003 Z4 3.0.

I was going to ask regarding the headlights, if i wanted the 2005 look with the clear signals under the headlight, are they just a straight swap?
Also how about the rears?

Thanks!

The front should be a straight swap but the rear needs wiring or new bumper. Not a straight swap for the rear. search and you shall find the answer.

Fixed it...

Yes, front headlights 2003-2005 are a straight swap (btw, there were clear headlights available in 2003 and 2004 as well, just a bit more rare, clears were not 2005 exclusive)

Tail lights will require you to do a few things:
1. Rewire your tail light wiring harness
2. Facelift rear bumper
3. Minor trimming on the bumper support bar
4. Facelift tail light trims
5. Recoding

All in all my cost was $160 for the rear bumper, $250 for the tails, $120 for the tail light trims. About $530 worth of parts, I can resell the old parts for probably about $300-400, so all said and done it is really not bad. The only reason I did mine though, is because I am repainting my whole car. Paint is another extra cost you will have to consider for the tail light trims and the bumper.

Its a lot more simple than it sounds, and for the dramatic cosmetic improvement, I think it is easily worth the time, effort, and $$$. Should you go down this route, I have an excel file with all relevant tail light coding information, as well as a few extra bits that can be coded on this car (such as convertible top opening/closing with the key fob)

If you do some research on this topic you will find some competing answers on how the tail lights should be rewired and some guides will tell you to tap the license plate light. You do NOT need to tap the license plate light for 12v if you recode, and I will have a definitive answer on how the lights should be rewired soon. My lights are in the mail now then I will write a short tutorial on it once I get it done

If you just want to get ride of the orange, you can swap 2005 tail lights over, they have clear circles, or what I did was I got some red film and covered up the orange. It looks all red now.

Also the 2005/clear headlights have a third turn indicator bulb that your car isn't wired for, but it's easy to jumper the connector from another bulb.

You don't need a new bumper or wirings to retrofit '05 rear lights. Direct replacement.

Really? Ok thanks!

Ill look around if anyone has the front then or maybe a junk yard.

Quick question since i still don't have my Z4 purchased yet...

How would these work on a z4? I have them on my E46 i got clears, but how do they apply to the z4?
