Gearbox & rear diff oil

Hi,

Can any one tell me how much gearbox oil and rear diff oil I need to purchase to replace these over the weekend when I service my car.

BMW service guy tells me I need 1.5 litres for the gearbox and 1.25 litres for the rear diff. Sounds like a very small quantity?

Thanks

Happy to help!

The plugs on both the diff and transmission are "one time use". You might get by with re-using if the seals are still pliable, but I'd recommend replacing them (and, I'm sure you know this, removing the fill plug first before the drain plug).

One thing that the link provided doesn't state, found in this DIY, is the use of a pump. After I changed mine, I tried to think of a way to do it WITHOUT the use of that thing...lol

Also, to add on to the one-time use. I opted (personal choice for ease of mind) to spend the money on plugs with magnets in them...tranny, diff, as well as oil plug (esp oil since you'll change the oil a lot more frequently than the others.)

Actually hadn't thought about the plugs. Back to BMW I go to buy them I'll prob get one for the engine, gearbox and diff.

Ummm why do you have to remove the fill plug before the drain plug? And do I also need to buy fill plugs?

Thanks

Because you want to make sure that you will be able to refill the oil. I believe there were cases which people stripped the Fill Plug and not be able to fill the oil back up.

you want to make sure that it will come out (not stripped, seized etc)
So that you are sure that you are able to fill, b4 you drain it down.
