At what point do you guys change tires?
I have the original PS2's on right now with a little over 9000 miles on them. I can slip the rear pretty easily with full DSC on and it's a little annoying.
Tread depth is currently 7/32 up front and 5/32 in the rear. For everyday driving it's fine but there is a very small chance I may go to a HPDE event but a much bigger chance that the car will be seeing some very twisty roads in the near future (tail of the dragon). I'm going to change to PSS with 255 and 275. Problem is Tire Rack is OOS until August. Is the 5/32 low enough to easily justify the change or is that still considered to be plenty of tread left? Thanks! |

Make sure your alignment is up to date and you should be set. So general rule of thumb for swap out/replacement of tires is 2/32's. Legal minimum is 2/32's. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...jsp?techid=157

lol, sort of. This is pretty much how I do it with my mustang. Currently my firestones probably qualify as slicks (the not sticky kind).
I guess I'll hang on to these a little longer. Maybe some of the slipperiness is due to the fact that I have short drives and the tires don't warm up. |

As long as there's no water around, you're fine. You'll have no wet traction with a low tread depth. If the tire aren't too old, you may have better dry traction at low tread depth.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Tend to get some sort of vibration before the cords show.
Less tread will yield better traction than a new tire, but very low or no tread on street tires actually offers poor grip. Not the same as a slick or racing tire. |

I don't even look at them until they start making noise. When PS2s get below about 3 or 4 32nds they start getting noisy. Sounds like a bad wheel bearing. Then I just plan for when it will be convenient to change them.
I'd track at 2/32s without a concern. But only for the simple reason that I always wear out the PS2 on the inside which won't see much wear on track days. There is usually plenty of meat left on the outsides.

According to what's been stated so far, my dry braking grip should be just as good at 5/32 as it was new. My dry threshold braking is definitely worse lately. Previously I could bring it down from 80+ to 20 or so without a sound. Now they tend to hit the ABS and screech much easier. I'm not going to do the HPDE event so I'm not too worried about them. I'll just take it easy later this month at tail of the dragon and then order the PSS from tire rack and cook down my PS2's for fun. |

Didn't see your post about the firestones. Just was generally speaking. Less tread is better grip than new up to a point.
5/32 is plenty and would last me a decent amount of time. I've even bought some 6/32 used tires lately without any qualms, but think its better off getting new to avoid the hassle. |

Had same concern a few months ago at 4 and 5/32nds..did an HDPE which shaved of 1/32nd (was PSS's) and drove it for 2,000+ miles until got down to 2/32nds. in other words, you should be fine.

Got me wondering if it's actually the breaks and not the tires. Can't see how at 9000. I bought it at 6600 miles but I don't think it was tracked prior. It's due for oil so I'll have my SA look at it next time it's in. |

Yeah, think you're prpobably good on the brake wear. I tracked with 40% brakes at 23k miles (at Laguna Seca, which is extremely hard on brakes) have put several thousand miles of hilly spirited driving and I'm at about 25% brake pads left. Either way SA would be able to tell you how many mm are left.

For street tires I change when they start to get spooky in the rain. PS2's were good in the rain almost until the center grooves were completely smooth, it was uncanny.

In my humble experience, street wear has little bearing on tire wear at the track, where you're working the tire shoulders, not the middle. You could have brand new tires and cord them on a track day, and still have full tread on the main tread surface.
Geez, maybe I should sell mine so I can get my AD08s! |
