Dinan High Flow Carbon Fiber Intake

I have read quite a bit about the Dinan High Flow Carbon Fiber Intake. they are having a 20% off sale, and thought maybe it was worth it. So, in short, for those of you who have it-is it worth it? Your short impressions? A guy from the local BMWCCA swears by it, but he also swears by everything Dinan, you would think he works for them....thanks everyone!

I have it and I like it. It growls when you get on the gas and it looks cool. The butt dyno says it makes a difference powerwise but I have never had the car dynoed so I can't say for sure. I got mine last year when they had the 20% sale so I say go for it.

I have it. Cannot prove that it increases performance.

I do like the way it looks and sounds.

I was not happy to learn that the supplied filter is designed to be replaced (not cleaned). Replacement filters via Dinan cost $69.

Just an FYI that the carbon fiber intake for E9X M3 is 10% off during the sale.

Have the MS and recently got the Dinan, really for looks and the fact that it's pretty easy to get replacement filters (I really don't want to clean them as it's pretty tough to get all the dirt out and don't mind dishing out the $65).

Having said that, I believe EAS does supply MS intake replacement filters for Stage II intake, and in terms of sound only, I think I slightly prefer the MS intake as is deeper/throatier, makes less of a quasi-fluttering sound if you are not in the high powerband 5000+ rpm and gun the throttle in a higher gear (both intakes do that though, even with proper installation).

Perceptive performance differential (between each other or vs stock) is pretty minimal, if anything, I think with the Dinan, it feels SLIGHTLY more torquey/responsive vs MS at the low end (2-4k rpm) and the MS seems to do better at the high end (7k+ rprm), but that's just splitting hairs/subjective opinion. My sense is that most would be happy with either option (and believe it's a worthwhile upgrade).

CA has tough emmissions testing like Mass. Any issues with the cold air intake????

Spoke w/ Dinan about this...the filter is made by K&N, however they don't recommend cleaning the filter (probably to sell more filters, but they claimed that it was better for max performance, as cleaning may not get everything), but is the same material as any K&N filter, thus can be cleaned/re-oiled as you would any oiled cotton gauze filter.

Have you or anyone you know actually cleaned the Dinan filter?

I could give it a try... I got a K&N filter as a back up.

No on either... actually a couple of reasons I got the intake are the ease of obtaining replacement filters vs cleaning them (I've done it on AFE filter in my prior car and easier for me to just buy new one) and the fact that it's made by K&N, which puts out a quality product. There's a Dinan service center not too far from where I live, so I can just pick up/avoid shipping costs.

This may not mean much but I think this is one of the best looking kits on the market.

Glad I asked! Thanks everyone for your help. Doesn't look like I have to worry about emissions testing, so I think I am going to go for it. Looks good, sounds good, and I have a Dinan center not too far from me, so maybe I can do the same with the filters.. thanks again, and feel free to chime in with anything else.

Now for everyone that is saying the intake sounds good, can you hear it over the exhaust (especially catless ones?)

I can hear it fine over my BMW PE. The intake really gets loud at WOT.

So this intake is only the elbow piece and a KNN filter? Does the elbow piece actually make it sound better vs just a KNN filter replacement?

Its sounds Real GOOD! it will make Any exhaust sound better, and im sure if you have any full exhaust youll see peak added HP from the intake. I have a stock exhaust and it made my car sound totally different under throttle.

Looks great. You have had luck with the pulley as well? There is a probable increase in power there as well it appears?
