why do m's not have adjustable ride height?

other lesser cars do. it would negate the need for aftermarket springs and still allow the car to be driven comfortably when needed.

The adjustable ride height suspensions I have come across also increased the weight. Maybe that was a factor?

Which lesser cars have adjustable height? I do not want air suspension on my M, I've been in Air-Matic AMGs and they feel odd to me.

Driving low cars is an art, you have to be aware and plan your approch to things... That said H&R springs are not very low... You do have to at least slow down/crawl over speed bumps. you could put it on air if thats what you would like... Thats what the "lesser" car companies do.

+1

I had the ABC hydraulic suspension on my old CL65 where you could change the height. It was a neat novelty but as a suspension, it really didn't do anything well. The only thing I found useful was raising the height to avoid hitting parking lot curbs.

In general you are right - most cars with height adjustable suspension have air suspension. However...

You don't need air suspension for ride height adjustment. Coilovers can do the same thing. The Lexus LS460 F-Sport uses coilovers with ride height adjustment which is speed dependent. The car lowers at higher speeds. In principle you could add a switch to lower it at low speeds too.

So basically mixed opinion then. This is the reason I won't get springs. It does affect drivability. You have to go slower over speed bumps and also over undulating road surfaces. If I picked out a street course around Miami to race you, I would thrash you with my stock suspension.

I am aware that coilovers are height adjustable, but I can hardly think of a car that comes from the factory with adjustable coilovers for under 100k. Also, the LS460 F Sport has air suspension according to Lexus site

"F SPORT-tuned, lowered Adaptive Variable Air Suspension, stabilizer bars and shock absorbers"

Maybe I confused it with the previous model the LS460 Sport.

I don't see why a car manufacturer couldn't use coilovers - they don't cost more than an air suspension.

Aloha
Alex
i actually don't crawl over them. i'm just used to hitting my brakes just right to slow down just before then coast over them, and almost always faster than most other non sports cars go over them. with springs, i'm not coming to a full stop or anything ridiculous like that. it's just a tad slower.

so what i'm hearing is air suspension is not a substitute for actual lowering for performance. it does, however, serve the purpose of aesthetics. but let's be honest, most of us put on springs for looks and not performance.

yes, but your MCB rides like an SUV. very comfy though i'm sure. in all honesty though, ride comfort is not affected. from my understanding, springs don't affect the bounciness of the car. they only decrease the absolute distance to bottoming out. so unless you bottom out, there should be no effect on ride comfort. and this has been my experience.

Seriously? You lower your car half an inch and you think the stock car is an SUV? What a dick.

I for one am sick of riding around in an SUV. I just can't decide if I want to ride in a crossover (H&R), a sport activity vehicle (ACS) or a proper sport saloon (KW V3)...
