Garage List
Rear Wheel Steering

As many of you know - the number one item on my list for improvement of the M5 has been active rear wheel steering. Now Porsche has taken it to their top models, I don't think BMW has any excuses. The absence of active roll control and active rear steering are weird omissions given both are in the BMW arsenal for non M vehicles. The system worked extremely well on my 2012 Dinan 550i.

The GTR has it. The 911 Turbo has it. The 550i has it as an option. The old 850CSI had it. Even the Lexus GS and the Infiniti M56 have it.

Now the 911 GT3 has it.

I am in line but going to probably withdraw until I get a test drive. Porsche is going to do well with this new GT3; still surprised they have not offered a MT.

BMW is next. Americans are the only ones that want manuals. Manual days are almost over.

IMHO, the main point of rear wheel steering is to counter oversteer at high speeds. I had it in a '91 3000GT VR-4. BMW uses DSC and individual breaking to do the same. No need for RWS. Plus it is counter to M philosophy of the rear wheel drive feel. Whereas its more needed in the tail happy 911 to keep the avg driver safe.

In the video Chris Harris was talking about how it counters understeer in tight corners. This is the same benefit I found on the 550i that I used to have.

At higher speeds, the front and rear wheels move in the same direction so it enhances stability when making rapid lane changes at highway speeds.

On the M5 the understeer is less than on the 550i due to the larger tires, but it is still there. ARWS would help.

Yes I know and get it; it is what it is. I will still try and have atleast one MT in my stable at all times. I can't say I get the itch to drive stick like I use to but its nice to have the option. I will be the 1st to admit that the new Dual Clutch trannys are amazing! I want to make sure to get a 7MT 911 to add to my garage at some point in the next couple of years. Only issue right now is garage/driveway space. Wife is already freaking that my M5 has to be parked outside "Robbers will see it". I asked her to put her Cayenne outside but she quickly declined that idea!

I loved active roll stabilization on my 550. Accompanied with my ACS springs my car was planted. Very little body roll. My buddies 550 without ARS but with the same springs felt like the titanic. Thankfully I didn't exclude that option when I ordered.. I would have been bummed out big time.

Dude!!! I was planning the exact same thing. Crazy. I think carmine looks more modern. Guards has a lot of orange in it. But 5500 for a slight color variation kinda sucks.

Good taste
