Auto Start/Stop : 2013

As received via e-mail from BMW NA:
"Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding your 2013 BMW M3.

The Auto Start/Stop feature in the 2013 BMW M3 Coupe and Convertible will now default off with every engine start. Temporary manual activation via the Auto Start/Stop button will still be possible. I hope this information is helpful."

^ This. At least in the US (not sure about Canada since BMW NA would cover them too), Auto Start/Stop always starts disabled; gotta love the "off light".

Although at least on the F30 (where it defaults to ON even in the US), BMW now allows owners to have their cars reprogrammed so it starts in Last State. Not sure if they'd cover that officially for the E9x, but it can be coded unofficially if not.

My '13 has always defaulted to "off." Recently had my wife's '12 6-series reprogrammed off to by the dealer.

Needless to say we're not fans.

Actually hit the car off button once while driving!! Trying to turn that damned thing off - hard to steer a 6-series when it's off, I don't recommend it

I think we're on the same page....
I asked them about US market cars, (mine yet to be built)
What this says is, it is only active if you want it to be.
2013 M3s don't force it on every time you start it, thank goodness.
I intend to never use it!

As far as Canada goes, my 2011 remains on whichever option it was before the car was turned off so whether it was on/off it will remain the same.

Maybe they can reprogram it for you?

Either "last state" or always off on start up should be fine for anyone who doesn't like the feature. I have tried it and don't like it much. Fuel savings aren't worth the wear and tear. Even in the BMW manual it states using auto start/stop may cause premature wear of certain components. No thanks.

There is a service bulletin that if you are in the US, have Auto Start and it is configured to default to off, they will program it be the last setting used. I had it done a few months ago. They didn't just flip the bit in the coding but updated the all the modules. It was a great reason to have all the latest code programmed into my car for free.

my salesman was talking to me about that, and showed me the on/off button. idk i think BMW wasted man hours putting them in a M3.

i believe it is illegal to idle for more than 20 seconds in Germany so it's not a waste of man hours at all by BMW..

nope..on the contrary, it saved man hours by fitting it on the M3. It's a worldwide feature they've implemented on all cars, so by custom fitting the M3 without the button would have cost them more money and time.

Now the dealer programming for default off/last setting, etc: that's wasted manhours b/c they didn't anticipate so much shit from USA/Canada customers.

while posting that i did think about maybe it being a feature they put in all cars. and maybe didn't cost them anything. but thanks for confirming

Here in Australia it is always on and the button will only disable it until next restart. I have spoken to several dealers here and they all charge $350 to reprogram it. They say BMW Aus does not have the same policy as BMWNA.

Any ideas how to do this myself? I know I can get Mike to remote program but he is also expensive considering this is the only feature I would like changed. Im willing to learn to code or something if needed.

Get the required coding software and set it up per the DIYs out there, use NCS Expert to pull a trace file from the IHK module, switch the MSA_MEMORY setting to aktiv, and code it back. That will put it into Last State mode.

Crappy feature. Tried it on for kicks the first day I picked up my M and never again!!
There is no way in hell that the constant cranking over of the engine is any good for it. I wish they would have included front PDC instead of this waste.

I'll admit I've used the auto start/stop, but only when I'm at a railroad crossing waiting for a train to go by

look at it this way. If the starter motor and battery are that much more robust to handle it, all the better for long term reliability (without using the feature that is)
