650iX Gran Coupe gas mileage.

Although my 2014 is not fully run-in yet, I thought I'd see what kind of mileage it would get. It was a cold morning, only 5C or 41F which is not ideal.

I drove on a level road at 100 km/hr (62 mph) for 10 kms in one direction and 10 kms back again with the cruise control on. The car was warmed up first and driven in Comfort mode. (EcoPro made no difference in these circumstances.)

The consumption measured as 8.7 L/100 kms which is 27 mpg (US) or 32.5 mpg (Imperial).

I'm actually pretty pleased at this as my 645Ci used to get about 8 L/100 kms and I thought the X drive and more powerful engine would exact a greater penalty. When the engine has more than its current 1000 kms and the weather warms up I'd expect a better figure yet.

Of course, the next 10 kms at 160 kms/hr in Sport mode was a lot thirstier. (Not recommended to go any faster while running in!)

Anyone else care to share their figures?

My 650xi coupe gets 10.5 to 11 mpg (US) in the city (pure city/suburban driving), and I max out at about 22.5 to 23 mpg highway.

I rarely get much more than 200 miles per tank. My max range is 360 miles, but that was 98% interstate at 70ish (emphasis on the -ish ) set on the cruise control.

I'll do another test when the car's run in, on a faster highway, where running at 130 kph won't attract a ticket...

640 gc just drove it home from the dealer, San Diego to Los Angeles with mild traffic and my comp averaged 29 mpg.

This is going to be a great weekend family car for me!

I have yet to see anything above 16 average with tons of freeway miles. May be I should stop down shifting. :P

I should stop downshifting. I should eat less bacon. Neither of these will happen in the foreseeable future. Fact.

I'm okay with 11.5 mpg.

Krnnerdboy, the 640 should get better mileage than the 650 - particularly if the 650 has the X drive.

I now have 3,300 kms on the 650iX and the mileage has improved. On a recent 400 km journey on back roads (100 kms/hr) and then on a major freeway (130/140+ kms/hr) with very little urban driving I averaged 8.9 litres per 100 kms or 26.4 mpg US.

And so far no oil required.

That would smell really good - until it didn't. The greenies might be happy, but running on a pork product would surely p!ss off some other group.

I have a feeling the turbos might not be too keen on bacon fat - the rind might impede the impellers.

And that is why the good lord gave us butter!

I'm afraid I've once again ruined a perfectly good thread.

I don't live in a city (any more) and rarely drive in one - but if I did, I have a feeling that 18 mpg US is about what I'd get too.

You are not alone. I live in Hong Kong (small city) and on the hill. I get a whooping 22.7l/100km. When translated to US numbers, is about 10.3mpg. And that figure, in an environment where pump price is essentially USD2.3/L, which equals USD 8.5/US gallon........ Not to mention the 650i GC costs USD200K over here, with less options than you guys at USD95K......

And you guys in the US are complaining........

Just go enjoy the car

These cars are impossible to break in properly....my MPG is on par with a Ford V10 currently, and I've got less than 300 miles on the clock.

I'm about to take 3200 km (2,000 mile) road trip with my GC pretty much fully run-in. (It has 4,000 km on the clock.)

I'll set the Trip Computer as I leave and report back in ten days or so.

Well, I'm back!

The road trip turned out to be 3740 km, (2324 miles) of mostly highway but mixed driving. The first part was around the very rugged north shore of Lake Superior with some of the steepest hills in Canada east of the Rockies. Then truly flat land around Manitoba - and then back again.

My gas mileage (91 octane) was 9.1 litres/100 km. This equates to 26 mpg US or 31 mpg Imp. My best day was 8.5 L/100 km on the flat prairies, the worst was 9.4 L/100 km in the mountains.

I'm very pleased at this mileage for a pretty heavy all-wheel drive car. I found that EcoDrive did make a difference when cruising at a steady 110 km/hr (about 70 mph) and it was quite visible in the Efficient Dynamics consumption graph. Whenever I switched to Comfort, up went the consumption a little and if I switched to Sport as I always did for passing, it went up a lot!

I found that when going down moderately steep hills it was best to turn off the cruise control temporarily because otherwise it would keep the speed at the set rate, even to the point of braking, rather than allowing the car to gain speed and thus momentum for the next uphill section. Of course, one has to be careful of the local constabulary in that situation!

Gas mileage or not, the best part of the trip was punching the throttle in Sport mode to pass a convoy of slowpokes - uphill! It's almost scary how quickly 200 kph comes up...
