Uneven wear on rear tires
Hey guys, I'd like an opinion on this.
I'm changing my tires for some Michelin PSS (yayy), and well, since I knew my current tires were on their way out I had a lot of fun burning them off . Anyways, I expected them to be completely bold, which they are, but the wear is very uneven across the tire. The inside edge is completely cut off. It could very well be because of my abuse the past months (donuts...), but still, I'm wondering if this kind of tread wear is to be expected on our cars. |

I'm fairly new to the 1 series but have worked selling tires for quite a few years. I just purchased some used 135i rims with stock tires rft on them and they have a similar wear pattern. i can't see both of these cars having "issues" and probably is due to the factory alignment. if you would like more even wear take out some of the rear camber.
also notice how both tires have the same wear pattern which means its very unlikely something is bent or damaged or lose causing odd wear since both tires are mirror images of one another. |

Time to have your alignment checked. A 4-wheel alignment is needed.

In any case, its generally a good idea to get an alignment done when you get new tires installed. Its just over $1000 here in the US for a set of Michelin Pilot Super Sports, so its worth the $100 to get an alignment from a good shop. By the way, you can't go wrong with the Pilot Super Sports. They are amazing in the wet, and every bit so in the dry as well. Plus bumps and small road imperfections wont cause a jolt inside the cabin anymore. Much more comfortable of a ride! |

Thanks! I guess it's not too abnormal then, but I'll ask for alignment when I receive my new rubber.
BTW, I've read something about the PSS having special sidewalls that deform to allow maximum contact area on the road. Maybe that helps to spread the wear more evenly? Curious to know what's your experience on that sparkyblue. |

Toe affects tire wear a lot more than camber. Too much toe out will do that.

My E39 M5 had a similar tendency - I always ran as close to zero toe as possible to help balance its tendency to push (awesome car BTW).

That's negative camber tire wear for sure. Is your car lowered?

I would usually say thats because of toe angle, but because its so concentrated on the inside corner of the tire, im guessing its because of camber and you beating the shit out of them recently.

toe eats the entire tire and you go through tires every 2,000-5,000 miles from scrub

OP - you want to check/look at your rear tension rods. The factory ones are quite wimpy. Your could be shot. But I do think you should check your alignment. When I replaced my rear tires my LR toe was out on one side. I never had hit anything. So it is possible to have an out of spec alignment over time.

Thanks for all the help . My car isn't lowered, it's all stock. I'm receiving my new tires this sunday, I'll ask for an alignment in the same time!

Camber wear should give you a more even tread pattern that fades in a more even fashion as it moves toward the outside of the tire.
Based on the extreme wear pattern on the inside versus the middle of the tire, this strongly resembles toe wear, as VMR mentioned. |

when talking to the shop doing your alignment tell them specifically what issues you're having and what you'd like done. as it's quite likely that your cars is in spec since this seems to be a common wear pattern. I'm not sure how much adjustment BMW has while remaining "inspec" but ask for a print out that shows your before and after settings to see precisely what they adjusted
