poll: who thinks this M5 is a keeper?

i've had 4 nice cars in about 6 years. now with the family getting bigger, trying to pay down mortgage, etc., i'm thinking maybe my disposable income might be better spent on something other than more torque. this car has as much power as i think i'll ever want, is as tech-y as i want, is comfortable, and big enough that i wonder if i actually ever need anything else in a car to get rid of this one for.

No regrets here. I can't think of a car I would rather have as a daily driver, regardless of price.

EDIT: I should clarify that by "keeper" I mean I'm happy with the car and have no immediate plans to turn it over for something else. I'm on a 3 yr lease and will not buy it out at lease end. The only thing I can think of that would compel me to switch it out early would be an M5 Touring!

I had one nice car for 16 years prior to this purchase, but maybe I'm easily pleased. It was my first really nice car ever, and I enjoyed it for what it was. This M5 has all the power, electrical gadgets, and comfort I'll need for my remaining years, so I hope it will last for at least another decade in my ownership. The only thing that would change that for me would be mechanical unreliability, either before or after the four year BMW coverage ends. There will be myriad temptations in the coming years no doubt, but unless you have to have the latest and fastest this M5 should maintain if you bought it with realistic expectations about its capabilities.

The car is amazing. Seems like most of the people I've read about wanting to get rid of their M5 fall into one of three categories:

1. Cannot afford it
2. Did not get exactly the colors/options they want
3. Feel a capricious need to upgrade (can be mitigated by getting #2 right)

Planning to keep for 3 yrs (max) just before the warranty runs out. Therefore, 2 more years and I am done, for sure.

I will keep this car forever or for 4 years, whichever comes first. Besides, I already penciled you in for another Euro Delivery in 2016 bro.

I love the car. However the brakes have started squealing at every stop now which is driving me f*cking nuts. I have NEVER had a new car with squeaky brakes before.

The days of keeping cars forever are over. The next one will probably have an all LCD display,590 hp and 600 lb ft of torque with eletric hybrid assist, get 40 mpg while being faster, more comfortable and cost the same. Our current ones will go the way of the dodo. Once my lease is done, it will either be some version of the 991 or the M4 with the upcoming WRX STi on the side.

Interesting you mention the HP and mileage improvements. I had the Lexus SC400 with a 250hp V8 that would get at best 20 mpg. On a 300 mile run with the M5 I managed 24 mpg on the freeway, while still hitting a few short 100+ mph bursts. The Lexus wasn't exactly thrilling, but an excellent, reliable car. The M5 of course did cost considerably more. Even if the next generation M has 700hp and gets 30mpg, this current M will still be thrilling for me. A disclaimer however, if I did have the wherewithal to take the financial hit every couple of years, I would buy new if the improvements were attractive enough.

Keeper for me, and I will move my 650cic first and get a 991! Then swap the M5 around 2020, and then move the 991. Keeps a rotation going.

I think it's a keeper for sure. My dream growing up and throughout my college years was to build a car collection. Recently, after leasing my first M car (2011 E93 M3), I fell in love with the M division and the big difference in their cars versus the regular series cars. I traded in my E93 M3, along with my 335i M sport and Jeep Wrangler for the F10 M5 I currently own. I love my M5, a rocket sled with all of the technology and luxury you can want in a car. But i also missed the nimbleness of the M3 and the S65 V8, which is IMO one of the greatest engines BMW has ever produced. So I've ordered an M3 coupe and will take delivery next month. It will be a great compliment to my M5.

My plan is to keep my M5 and M3 and if God continues to bless me, to add the M4 to the M collection. (I would also love to own a Porsche GT3 and Aston Martin Vantage convertible in the future.) I like to attend BMWCCA track events, but they don't allow convertibles on the track (why I traded vert in): having the M3 coupe will be perfect for these events. I'll probably track the M5 to experience the full potential of the car, but I don't plan on doing so regularly.

In short, yes I think the M5 is a keeper and so is any other M car. Enjoy in good health everyone.

This is a good one, back when I got my e46 M3 I bet my sister $1000 that Id keep it FOREVER. Well that didn't happen, nor did I pay my sister $1000. As much as I loved the M3, I just didnt want to risk keeping it out of warranty, and Im not sure Ill want to keep this M5 out of warranty either.

if the extend warranty isn't too ridiculously expensive, I may consider keeping it after the warranty runs out. Despite the weather not being the best, I have put about 3500km on it over the last 6 week or so and it has been quite a while since I last drove a car so much in such period of time. The other thing is, I am getting around 600km/tank (7.2km/L on the display), amazingly, it's got better mileage than my awd acura tl. Very happy man here.

As much as I love this M5, it'll be no fun to maintain off warranty and as others have mentioned, something even better will be available.

Definitely a keeper for me.
First BMW but probably not my last.
I usually keep my cars for more than 3 years.

I hear 'ya about the 2010 GTR. Mine is for sale now while we await re-delivery of our ED M5. I'll be sad when she goes. But, a new chapter is upon us and this M5 is also a magnificent car. Smooth, silky, comfortable, classy, just an all around well-done machine. You just can't go wrong if an F10 M5 is your next "nice car."
