TeknikensVarld: BMW M3 vs Audi S5

Spotted in Sweden, I guess they are preparing a duel between these two

S5 vs. M3? Audi has brought a butter knife to a gun fight.

I don't think Audi ever meant for the S5 to compete with the M3. Try the RS5.

Agreed. However, if pure speed and power is your thing, the RS5 will likely be the way to go; albiet less of a driver's car. Price alone will likely put the RS5 too far above the M3 to make a direct comparison.

Noone complained when S4 V8 were compared to M3 E46 over and over again, now suddenly a S-version isnt a competitior to M3
I see no wrong comparing S5 to a M3 once again, it worked before and it works again. Besides, S5 is the only thing Audi has for now that can be compared to a M3.

It makes more sense from performance and cost to match them this way:

S5 vs 335i
RS5 vs M3

where I live a 335i cost exactly as much as a A5 3.2q. There is no RS5 yet but there is another Coupe, S5.

That's true and it goes back to the old debate of whether it's more appropriate to compare cars by performance or by price.

Unfortunately for Audi, they've gone and priced the S5 withing spitting distance of the M3 in most markets. Throw in the fact that they are both sleek, 2 door coupes with naturally aspirated V8s spouting quad exhaust tips out the backside and the comparison is going to be made.

As for the RS5, I have a feeling the R8 will limit just how crazy Audi can get with it. In general, Audi's "RS" cars have stuck me as overpriced and overweight and the poorest values of all the German factory tuner specials.

Yeah, way ahead on price, but behind in performance. I've seen stats where the E46 spanks the RS4. The RS4 is just another porky, over priced, four door, Audi, good for transporting the grandparents through NY winters.

Th S5 only competes with the 335i, guzzles far more gasoline and will likely cost much more. Way to go Audi!

Yeh def not to be tried on normal roads. Its amazing how far sideways that audi can go and still be able to bring it back straight. I'm sure it is much more fun to do in an M3. I've always wanted to learn how to drive power slide like that. Has anyone here ever learned how to do that?

The other driver is Jason Plato, a professional British motor racing driver, currently in the British Touring Car Championship.

Also, anybody notice the Interlagos Blue with Imola Red interior on the E46 M3 CS?

In the video of the M3 vs the RS4 at Hockenheim, the RS4 is the old generation (B5) and not the latest B7 model. Power, if i standard spec, is 375bhp.

Exactly! Looks like the S5's performance is comparable to the 335i but with a bigger price tag. And if the RS5 (rumored to have 450 hp when it finally arrives) is not available now for this match, then IMO the logical choice has to be the RS4.
