Suspension Question

My 135 is about to hit 100k. The suspension doesn't feel too bad, but i have been noticing some excessive noise over bumps sometimes like a clanking from the front.

My question is what parts should be replaced around this amount of miles? I have a set of shocks and struts as well as a front sway bar from my first 1er that i crashed with 30k miles on them. Should i just throw those one?

Thanks

I would look closely at your ball joints and control arms.

Over here in Germany the shops have a machine that can vibrate and wiggle the suspension and see whats worn. They can even dyno the suspension and print you out a graph to show you whats worn. But I don't think things are that advanced as far as suspension diagnostic equipment. Just take your car to a good repair shop and have them look things over.

You might want to upgrade to the M control arm bits that many 1Addicts have done. $400 to $700 for all the parts plus install.

Thanks for the input! So it looks likes it more the control arms than the struts and shocks?

Also could be a wheel bearing that is going out. Having it checked out might not be a bad idea

Front tension rods and upper strut mounts to start. Have a look at the struts too as they tend to lose their gas charge in as low as 25-30K miles.

My experience with BMW suspension is that with regard to the shocks, even non-Bilstein parts have a service life much longer than 100K miles. I've owned 8 BMWs and many have gone over 150K miles before the shocks needed replacement. YMMV of course, but as a rule of thumb I'd say at 100K you've still got lots of life left in the shocks.
