Sub frame bushings

So I've noticed that upgrading to the m3 subframe bushings seems to be a popular mod on here. Can someone tell me what they are and where they go? How many are there? I guess I'm just confused on what the subframe is classified as really?

I am installing poweflex inserts next weekend. a lot easier to do and no special tools needed. I read in e90post they give 80% the benefit of the m3 bushings. I am also installing new powerflex bushing on in the toe arms.

As you can see on the picture below (from realoem.com), your rear wheels are fixed on the suspension which (through the links) is connected (see picture below in grey) to a "subframe":

Here you can see the whole subframe and you can see on each corner a bushing (number 2 & 3) which connects this subframe to the structure of the car.

As you can imagine, each time that you turn, the lateral forces are transmitted through this bushing to the car. It means that if this original bushings are too soft, this subframe can move (relative to the car) and give an impression that the suspension "floats" on the road.

The M3 bushings (I'm busy with the installation) are much stiffer than the original ones and this drastically reduces the move of the suspension. So your car is more "on rails" and follow better and nearly immediately your orders.

Well technically they are "plug and play". However, you'll still need some type of a bushing press to get the old ones out and put the new ones in. This type of job is best left to a pro shop.
