How dated does the 2008 look compared to a 2013?

I'm picking up a 2008 E93 that is fully loaded. I've heard people say that they prefer non-nav used cars because it looks dated. Has there been an update display resolution with the 2013 M3? Or is the 2013 all software updates? What can be updated on the 2008? Thanks for your comments!

2008 uses the CCC navigation (DVD based)

some 2009s and up use various version of the new CIC navigation (hard drive based)

some 2011+ models come with the combox option which allows even more cool features

Thanks for that! So there is always a DVD in spinning when maps are being accessed? How much does it cost to update the maps?

I updated the post with a video. the CCC nav seems very dated to me. If nav and techy items are important to you. Its worth checking it out on another 3 series before you bite the bullet. to upgrade from the CCC to the CIC system is so so expensive its sometimes cheaper to just buy a new car :P

second that, if navigation / gadgetry is an important factor for you (a must have) - get a 2012-13 M3. If it's not important, then an '08 would be fine and at the right price point.

CCC upgrade to CIC cost $2500 installed, to some i guess its expensive but most its the best mod they ever had.. big difference.. my 08 CCC totally sucks.. but im not picky so why spend 2500 but if i had the extra dollars. ... no doubt i would do it in a heart beat...

doing this mod surely not expensive and buying a new model M3 is sure not a cheaper option...

i've been quite happy with the NAV in my 08 e92...its used so rarely that it really does not matter. On a side note, I feel the single knob & button is a simpler & cleaner looking design vs the multi-button setup in the 09+.

...and to be blunt, 99.9% of the people don't care about reading e-mails while driving or most of the other features. Only thing the 09+ electronics have over the previous gen is that they are hard drive based so instant boot-up when starting the car and the screen is higher resolution which makes for prettier looking maps if one cares.

With LCI taillights added, 0% dated. As some others have mentioned, the electronics are somewhat improved. But it certainly does not look dated. A '08 with great condition paint and LCI tails would be indistinguishable from a brand new one.

I had CIC in my 2010 335i and the older CCC system in my "new to me" 2008 E92 M3. I'm a BIG technology guy and while the CCC is "dated" compared to the new systems, it's still not bad. I think it's worse if you were like me and went from CIC to CCC. I really prefer the Tech package in my 08 for Comfort Access and more importantly, the M drive options. If there is one benefit to the DVD based system it's finding Map updates on the interwebs or free or eBay for cheap...

Spending more money on a newer year car just for a better Nav system seems a bit crazy to me...especially because you don't buy this car for it's nav system. You buy it because it's a badass high performance driving machine.

The biggest issue I have with the BMW navigation is probably still there. It continually finds the worst possible route and while directing you there will continually transpose "keep right" for actually turning right.

It is a sweet chunk of billet aluminum...

You can feel the time and attention the designer put into it.

I've always been in the "less is more" camp when it comes to my cars (even though I'm a huge tech-geek at work and home), so when the M3 I found came with all the bells and whistles, it took some adjustment. Four months in, I'm very happy to have keyless entry/start, Bluetooth, USB audio in, nav., sunroof, etc. Just hope I feel the same 4 (8?) years down the road. She's a keeper!

*All this added luxury has come at a penalty of ~1000 extra pounds over my last car. Glad I've got over 2.5x the power to make up for it!

Probably should have put "luxury, safety and technology". My last car didn't even have ABS...

Just noticed you hit 1000 posts. Nice, but you've got some work to do to catch up with some of these guys!

With some of the updates your 08 will be no different than a 2013

The CCC iDrive interface is indeed very dated looking, but it get's the job done. It could be a little snappier and prettier but all-in-all it functions well. I really like the stainless steel knob. It has a good high-quality feel to it. The GPS is surprisingly smart, iPod/MP3 integration, sat/radio and CD work fine. The premium audio system is spectacular. 825 watts is more than enough to hurt your ears.

Modding a CIC unit into a CCC car looks like a PAIN and costs several thousand so don't plan on doing that, just wait for the right car.

i didn't want nav,so an 08 was great for me.i like the taillights fine,the later ones look kind of squinty to me.i found a local car,well-cared for,that had almost everything i wanted,and nothing i didn't,so i jumped on it,and i'm glad i did.

This is precisely the reason I limited my search for an '08 E90 to AW and SSII. On a darker car, the white sticks out so much more (too much for my taste). That's what blackline tails are good for, I guess!
