Question on replacing shift knob

I just bought a BMW Performance knob for my 6mt. I know I am going to need a new boot to install but is there anything else I need to buy? I remember hearing I need a ring or something? Can I reuse the old one on my stock shifter or do I need to get a new one?

Thanks in advance for the help.

honestly you dont even need to buy a new boot, you can cut your existing one!

Right behind ya man. Bought a ZHP knob which is on the way.

Need a tyrap and a xacto, as far as I know.

Xacto to separate the OEM knob from the boot, and a tyrap to zip tie the boot back.

Only advice on removal is to straddle the knob (so to speak ), wrap a towel around it and lift with your legs, maintaining grip with the towel around the knob. My E46 one popped right off with this technique.

I should have mentioned I will be replacing the boot due to preference. I am going to order the LeatherZ Alcantara boot with M stitching.

So based off that, what would I need?

I know I should talk to LeatherZ about this but they are currently closed and I want to put the order in online by tonight. Thanks

just make sure your head is not right above the knob when youre pulling it out, youll end up with a black eye!

The thing is, I'm not sure if Leather Z boot comes with the frame around the trim. They should provide it for easy install, but if they dont', then that's alot of gluing on your end to the OEM frame.

My only word of advice on the LeatherZ is that he leaves a LOT of extra alcantara at the top of the boot... My Whalen shit knob would not lock in place until i pulled the boot off and trimmed all of the extra alcantara off and removed his zip tie... It looks just as good...

Good luck.
