Car has already been to the dealer and repaired so I know what went wrong. But what the hell, slow night. Anyone want to play Doctor and diagnose the problem.
Details on car: Purchased in March '12, 6 months and 6k miles. Below is the story and symptoms. Started up my car to head to work Monday and I noticed the engine was running really rough for a few seconds, RPMs dropped and fluttered a little below 500 and I almost thought it was gonna die on me. Then it quickly smoothed out and jumped up to about 1K RPM (as per usual at start up). Headed out and didn't really think much of it. Stopped to get morning coffee at local conveinience store about 1/2 mile away from house. Came out and started car and the I Drive Screen starts lighting up like I hit the mega millions on a slot machine. DSC malfunction, DBS malfuntion, Check Engine, Engine Malfuction(Limp Mode) "get car to BMW service center as soon as possible". Engine runs rough and RPMs drop every few seconds but corrects and jumps back up over 1K and smooths out again. Well knowing that BMWs are basically computers on wheels I try the old reliable "turn it off and back on again" trick that seems to work when my PC shits the bed. No dice!! I live only 5 miles from work and don't have to hit any highways so I decide to go ahead and limp in to work. Car runs OK, but continues to sputter a little bit when decellerating to stop. OK once back on the gas. Make it to work, call SA at BMW Of North Houston and he says bring it on in. I wait untill lunch and take the rest of the day off. Start car up to head to dealer which is only a few miles away and get all the same codes. Limp to dealer and shut it down in the serice bay. Sign in and wait for SA. We go out and start the car up and guess what? No codes But after about 30 seconds car throws "Check Engine" and is taken away. Well that's about it. I will wait for a few responses and then i will post pic of Invoice. Probally not a hard one to diagnose, but once again what the hell... Last edited by CrusherM3; 09-13-2012 at 09:45 PM.. Nope..
Let me take the opportunity to say that BMW of North Houston did a great job as per usual. Very good customer service. No curb rash on rims and only 6 mile test drive after work was complete. I checked the car out well before I left the dealership. See, all those threads on dealership mischief did help... |

Do we have a picture of what was replaced? I am curious what this thing looks like.

I have seen other posts by other members that had the same problem, so I figured someone would get the answer pretty quick. I am a little worried that this happened with a car that is so new. When I picked up the car it had 4 mile on the odometer. Has 5957 now. |

It probably takes "Four BMW techs 5 hours" to replace (sems about the same amount of effort as the windshield I asked for a quote on), so figure it only sets you back about $2k at the dealer... About right? |

No $ on the invoice. Just what I posted. I have seen the probelm described on the forum before ,so I guess it is a fairly common problem with our cars. Question I have is it the first problem in a series?

Waited about three hours...but at my request...I had taken the afternoon off and really wanted my car back. But, alas the aforementioned part was not in house. Did get to see some 2013 cars and that kept me busy for a while. Saw the new 650 4 door and I didn't think I would like it, but it looks good in person.
They sent me home in a 535 loaner...felt like I was driving a battleship...everytime I turned i had to squelch the urge to scream "coming about!!" |

i think BMW just made a defective part. I think most cars get idle air control valve issues when gunk starts building up in the unit after lots of miles. A lot of E9X M3s are having theirs replaced very early in life.
