135i Cobb Stage 1 Dyno

Hi all,

Yesterday I decided to run my car on the dyno to see how she liked the Cobb. She's always felt great on the road but I really wanted to see the way in which power and torque was delivered. It was a hot ass day here, we get them sometimes in the UK, honestly , 32c (90f) and it was humid as hell.

I previously ran the car stock on a cooler day and it made stock power, 302bhp/299lb-ft.

I'm pleased with the result yesterday, obviously it suffered in the heat with stock FMIC and stock everything else (this car is tune only) but we pulled 359bhp/408lb-ft. The dyno operator was impressed but said the heat really killed it as it did with all the cars on that day, he'd expect closer to 380bhp on a cooler day but we all had fun. I'm more pleased with power curve, nice and smooth so well done Cobb.

The next few month will take it to Stage 2+ and I'll dyno again in the Spring to compare. Here are shots of the graph, I'm minus a printer right now.

Nice numbers on an otherwise stock car.

Good numbers for a stock set up and stage 1. Also your stock run at 302 is higher than what I have seen on here compared to others who made a stock baseline.

+1. Both stock and cobb numbers seem too high. Are these crank numbers?

N54

Yes these are crank and not WHP so that's why they may seem high. We don't measure in WHP here, every dyno measures flywheel and I'm not sure of the conversion. In the UK the 135i/335i N54 are rated at 306bhp/295lb-ft so baseline was about right, low mileage car, 94Oct.

I'll try to find out what dyno it was, we don't get Mustang over here so rule that out.

If you believe COBB's claim, you'll get a 30% increase on stock numbers, that's around 380-390bhp @ flywheel. I'd say 390bhp is too high but 380bhp is realistic on a more forgiving day, heat wise. That's a great gain with tune only, even the 60 horses I got in this hellish heat was impressive, it didn't heat soak as bad as my VAG cars stock vs stock.
I'm not new to turbo tuning so I don't get hungup on dyno figures so much, it can be a lottery. What's nice to see is the progressive way in which the Cobb map delivered its power, it's always a worry when you don't dyno tune a car (as I did with my VAGs), I was dreading seeing spikes here but I'm happy and most importantly so is the car.

Summer doesn't last long over here so she'll run better still come Autumn, a bigger FMIC is going on regardless though.

No, they all actually measure in rwhp, it's just they only ever give the customer the 'corrected' fwhp figure, instead of the rwhp, because people have become largely ignorant of reality here in the UK over the years.
25+ years ago, when there there were much fewer RR's in the UK, you only ever got a rwhp figure, 'corrected' fwhp figures didn't exist.

I did wonder about that. 25yrs back I wasn't part of this world yet, I guess they changed to flywheel hp to satisfy people's ego's when it comes to numbers, after all it sounds more but it doesn't really matter what it says if you're losing too much before your wheels. I leave the numbers to those who it matters to, I'm more of a driver myself and base my opinions on the thrills had on the road.
