WOW! It's all the DI6's hu!

The other day I was on my way to the drop zone to get some skydiving in. The road to the airport is more or less uphill for a number of miles. In front of me was this 535. Long story short this kid in a WRX comes next to him and revs his engine and the two do a quick little race from 55-100 or so. And let me tell you when that guy in the 5 punched the gass...the big black plume of black carbon that came from his exhaust was impressive! At first I thought it was a diesel until I pulled up and saw yeah 535. No clue on the year but wow! I think BMW has got to be thinking they may be in a world of hurt if all of these I6DI engines are building carbon!

The black smoke was unburned fuel, not carbon build up.

Unfortunately though, carbon build up IS a problem for all DI engines, It's just the nature of the engines.

Nah man I've been around cars for a long long time.....no way can that black smoke be unburned gas. For one it would have smelled like unbruned gas and not like dead oil!
Wooh! You know if this keeps going the EPA will have to have a talk with BMW about their engine causing problems with the polution systems on the car!

It's fuel, very common on conservatively tuned turbo engines. My WRX did the same thing until I had it tuned.

Un-burned fuel, my porsche turbo did that while I had it pig rich. Leaned it out and cleared right up!

Tick in-burnt fuel!

DI tends to be more prone to smoking than port injection. Smoke threshold tends to be the limitation on OEM power output - they can't pass emissions with smoke out the exhaust. No doubt the 535 had a tune!

A bone stock WRX is 220 to 265hp at the crank depending on the year, minus a lot of drivetrain losses, that's not a lot of power at the wheels. Subarus are NOT very good at 55-100mph pulls. They're known for falling to slightly modified Neon SRT-4s in highway pulls. Great from a dig if you know how to launch, but they lose a lot of power top end from the AWD system and sometimes crappy gearing.

A 535i with is 300hp at the crank, possibly underrated, and less drivetrain loss. It's easily 40-80hp more to the wheels than a stock WRX. The extra 500-600lbs of weight doesn't matter as much at 55-100mph. The gearing in the BMW is also tighter in higher gears.

Nothing remarkable about this story.

More than likely the old man never gets on his car and a lot of times when you putt around town you'll get the ECU use to running leaner and when he stomped on it the cars first reaction was to dump a lot of fuel. I see It all the times with my 60 year old friend and his new GT500. He never gets on it but once in a while and when he does black puff comes out when he jumps on it. pretty normal.

Modern engine computers are smarter than this. They're going to be very well calibrated from the factory even if there is not much learned data at higher loads. Even if it was rich, running rich should not produce a visible black smoke unless it is a diesel.

I would sooner guess it is carbon dust from the inside of the exhaust that is disturbed and ejected by higher exhaust flow.

Could be. I can smell raw fuel when he punches it when behind him so maybe a little of both. There is a TON of fuel that car dumps when that supercharger starts pumping air in a 500+ HP car. Plus its a brand new car. Not much to be gathered up in the exhaust...

Every stock turbo car I've ever seen does this. My mazdaspeed3 and my buddies Evo8 were almost comical in their smoke production when stock.
