Front license plate...dumb question but curious
For NJ/NYers,
might be a dumb question, but for every 10 M3s I see, 7~8 of them do not have front license plate. Not just Ms, or BMWs, but all the local porsches and Ford GTs and Corvettes and Ferraris and even all the S2000s and VW cars I see on the streets do not seem to have front license plates at all. For those who do not put front license plate, do you guys just drive around and get tickets? jus live with it? Cops can pull you over just for no front license plate? |

I don't have front plates on my M or my Porsche. I have passed many cops(even at the end of the month quota time), and haven't had any issues...so far.

In CA you are required to have front plates.
I have not mounted a front plate and essentially drive around with my fingers crossed that I will not get stopped. I do the same with my tinted windows.

No front plate tickets in Suffolk L.I. are $135 each
I've only received one over a year ownership, and it was from an unmarked cop that was out to get people that day...I had seen him with somebody else pulled over a couple hours earlier on that same road. Pulled me over for speeding (68 in a 55 on a road that everyone does at least 60 ) but just gave me the no front plate ticket. It comes down to what area you live in (higher population density usually means higher cop presence), and how much having a clean looking front end is worth to you. |

If/when I get my first ticket, I'll probably cave and put my front plate on. If I can go 3-4 years without getting caught, I'll consider it time well spent with the beautiful front end of the ///M |

depends. I have PA plates where you only need 1 plate. Now NY/NJ I believe require 2 plates a front and back. To be honest, why risk the chance of getting pulled over for something so dumb as to not having a front plate.

after 4 years of not having it on, I finally caved in after Yonkers parking authority started cracking down on front plates I bought a front plate mount....I didn't even have one on my Element but had to mount it on there too...I live in NJ & only got pulled over by Port Authority coming over the GWB once

I've ran no plate on all my cars and I've only gotten 1 no plate ticket in the pass 5 years. Really depends on the city your going through and the cops. I live in NJ and I always avoid Palisades Park and paying cash through tunnels.

No front plate has saved me more...
I've had a 335, e92 m3, continental gt, Carrera 4s and now another m3 over the past 6 years and probably have been pulled over 6 times with 3 tickets for only not having a front plate. Now where my lack of a front plate has helped is when I have gotten pulled over for something much more serious (speeding usually 20mph +) where the officer was nice enough to give me either a front plate ticket, tint ticket or both instead of the speeding ticket. I have had this happen probably about 50% of the time with roughly the same numbers above. I will never put a front plate on...just ruins the look of the front of the car IMO!

Yonkers are assholes. I had a plate cover which was clear and had no type of mirage image and they would hammer me for having it. Like others mentioned it really does matter where you live. I'm not sure if law enforcement can uphold another states laws such as having 2 plates on a vehicle. But if you are within your state 75% of the time you still run the risk of getting an easy summons or having police pull you over for something petty.
