Diesel v. Twin Turbo
Fellas, I'm SURE this is a repost, but I'd like to get people's updated thoughts on this. My wife wants an X5. I've heard great things about the diesel vs. the twin turbo. She is NOT going to tune this car down the road, so I don't much care about that. Can y'all weigh in on pros/cons/which you like better?
Thanks... |

Do you realized that the diesel is "twin turbo" as well?

What's funny is that neither of the 6 cylinder X5s available in the USA are twin-turbos, at least not in the commonly accepted definition. The 35i N55 engine has one turbo with "twin" scrolls and the 35d has two turbos that are sequentially paired, but aren't technically twins. The older N54 engine (never used in a US X5) was a twin turbo design, as is the N63 in the 50i and the S63 in the X5M.
But like many others, I will tell most folks that my X5 (35d) has a "twin-turbo" motor as it sounds cooler. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin-turbo As to which is better, I like the 35d, but it came down to back-to-back test drives at the dealership. I like the torque and the less frenetic feel of the diesel, and do not mind routinely going 500+ miles on a tank. Plus, when I bought mine in late 2010 the incentives and tax-breaks for the diesels made them that much more attractive. |
