550i or 335i

I know these cars are quite a bit different
I just sold my lexus gs350, great car
I decided I wanted to get back into a BMW
Originally I wanted a 335 coupe, loved the way it drives
After continuing to look I stumbled upon the 550i and it is a very sexy car
Both cars I am looking at would be 2008-2009 with sport package and automatic

My commute to work is 7 miles and on the weekends we are always in my wife's sequoia with the kids
Annually I drive less than 15k miles a year

The 550 seems like more bang for the buck

Which car would you rec
Which is more reliable
Downsides to either
Which would hold its value better
Etc

Any help would be great

I have an 08 550 that I picked up in sep of 2011 and I absolutely love it!! Trust me don't get the 335 the 550 is worth every penny. It drives like a dream. I've had the 335 as a loaner car before it doesn't compare once you've been behind the wheel of a 550i especially if you've been driving in sport mode. Here is the one downfall of the 550i it makes you really wonder how much more awesome the M5 might be :-)... I really want an M class next!

I also was looking into both cars and finally decided on the 550i. The 335i has problems with the high pressure fuel pump. I read all the forums and I have a couple friends who have personally taken their 335i to the dealership for that issue more than once. All in all I was looking for reliability because I bought used. CPO but it's still used. The acceleration on the 335 was def faster, but I bought a sprintbooster and it immediately took care of that. Love my 08 550i! Hope that helps.

OP, I am just curious how your GS 350 was? The handling, quality, power, etc... especially compared to the fact that your are familiar with BMW models

I own both 07 550i sport and '11 335i M-sport convertible.

Quite different feeling. You need to go drive both (in similar optioned version). The 550i is definitely more similar to the GS350 in executive feel with an awesome BMW sport tightness and feel. 335i is much smaller but feels more 'sporty' to me. More tossable.

I just last week made the choice between a 335i and a 535i, and it was no contest. The 535i was way better. It drove better, was more comfortable and with the sport package handles great. I am sure the 550i is just as nice, but I wasn't willing to spend the extra bucks.

550i is the way to go. It will handle all your needs and be less problematic than x35i's

I made the plunge two weeks ago and bought a 550i over a 535 mainly due to the fact I would end up spending alot to get the 535 to be like a 550, especially in looks and performance not to mention the sound of that V8 is parellel.

In either case, Congrats on your ride and post some pics.

Trust me 550
Is the best choice, not that bad on fuel and much better than the Merc E550. Trust me I have a 550xDrive and one of the best purchases in my life, aside from my house.
Enjoy it!

Test drives

Dilemma...which car to buy. I currently own a 2006 330i sedan with a six-speed manual transmission. It's been the best car I've ever owned, very reliable and always fun to drive but its time for a new car. I was interested in a 6-series and test drove the brand new coupe this afternoon and it is a dream car...just don't know if I want to drop $100,000 on a car. I also tested a 2012 535i and a 335i (6-speed manual). None of the cars come with all that I'd like. The 335i isn't available with vented seats or in the space-gray color I want but I loved driving it; it was tight and sporty and the clutch is smooth as silk...but will it be as reliable as my 330i? The 535i seemed a bit stodgy but I liked the size (it was suggested that I might like the 550i over the 535i for a more sporty feel) and it is available with all the options I'd like (but do I want that larger car with a manual transmissjon which I love to drive?). The new model 6-series coupe (sedan) doesn't have a sunroof that opens (it only vents) and I'm sure I'd miss that option and the extra $20 to $35 grand in cost!) and again, I'd miss a manual transmission! I actually can skip the manual...we do have a 2006 M3 in the garage that I can always drive...it's not an every day driving car though. Opinions?
