Dealer offered maintenance plan for wear and tear
Hey Guys,
I am taking delivery of my car this Friday. The dealer had suggested i take a plan that covers four years on any wear and tear part, i.e break pads, rotors, calipers, wipers etc including labour. The cost $1750 (keep in mind in Canada everything cost at least 15% higher than the states). Do you think it's worth getting? How many times will I realistically change my brakes . I'll be doing about 12500 miles a year. Thanks guys! |

So you guys in Canada don't get the 4 year / 50,000 miles free maintenance? All that stuff is included in the US. Or do you mean 4 years in addition to the free maintenance?
Either way, you're thinking about it int he right way. How much do you expect to spend in maintenance over 4 years vs. the cost of the program. If you put on 12,500 per year, you may need new brakes in the fourth year, but not rotors under normal use. Calipers? I can't see why these would ever need to be changed. Wiper blades are cheap. I got an OEM pair on eBay for $30 (they're something like $80 at the dealer). Does wear and tear include tires? That would be amazing and def a good deal.

Not worth it IMHO. My last car had 60k on it when I sold it and the brake pads were still ok (I didn't let the wife drive it).
If you do track days it's a bargin. Bet there is super fine small print though. |

[QUOTE=Vert335i;11453162]Yes we do have 80,000 km maintenance but they said it doesn't cover the breaks and stuff that are used over the years. After hearing you guys out I think I might skip on it, and no it doesn't cover tires.. They have a plan for that for $1800 that will cover maximum of $6000 worth of replacement that includes the rims, but only the OEMs but I will change my Rims from the OEMs.[/QUOTE
Interesting how cars are marketed differently. We get coverage for brakes, wiper blades, pretty much anything that wears out in the first 4 years. But i think you're doing the right thing. You can save that money and set it aside for maintenance costs.

I would pass on this maintenance plan. The finance managers job is to up sell you on everything they can dream up to include wheel and tire insurance, interior protection plan, and you name it. It's additional dealer profit pure and simple. If you do track days, they can cancell your warranty in addition to not replacing brake pads, etc under your maintenance plan. Most car manufactures warranties state that the warranty is void should the vehicle be used in any typr of racing or speed contest. Save your money. The only answer you need to remember when in the finance managers office is "NO".

OP .. if your car is new then just ignore what else the salesman will try to sell you. Do read the fine print as to what is covered under the warranty and maintenance plan 4 year/80,000 KM
Just an example ... When I picked up my 2012 I had a call a day before ... the Sales Manager wanted to sell me rim and tire insurance he stressed that my car has RFT ... I stooped him right there and told him to check since M3 cars do not have RFT ... after 10 minutes being on hold he came back and confirmed my car has performance tires and not RFT. Goes to show you what the sales staff knows. People here know more then they do ,,, so I recommend you check it out yourself.
