recall

Hi: Does anyone know why the battery in my 2011 128i needs a recall, please? The dealer was vague, as usual.

I have a recall as well.I believe the battery needs to be upgraded to a larger cranking amp battery. Not 100% positive though!
Cheers

Mine was swapped last summer under a recall notice, dealer was vague as usual, but the new battery has a higher CCA rating than the old one.

Yeah had mine done last year. They had to reinstall my car's software, but it failed 3 times so they had to have it over the weekend. When I got my car back I noticed some of my iDrive interface was updated as well, but my maps remain the same 2009.

Mine was done last summer. If I recall correctly, it was a 70 Amp to 90 Amp upgrade and required programming. I don't know if it was a Canada-only recall.

Dealer called during the summer of 2011, to have it replaced as well.

The story over the phone that I got was that ..."in Germany the winters are not as harsh as the ones we have in some areas of Canada, so the engineers that fitted the battery in the 1 series did not calculate for the additional amperage required to start on extra cold mornings, hence that's why it needed to be brought back to have it replaced."

Im a little curious about the explanation, as BMW has been exporting cars to colder climates for decades, hence why is it that they seemed to "forget" about compensating the battery amperage just for our cars?

A software update to change a car battery? God damnit BMW, must you overengineer EVERYTHING? Bad enough you replaced a $5 oil dipstick with a $400 sensor.

And come on, what happened the last time Germans underestimated the power of winter?
