2012 m3 prob

So gents I have a few friends that work for BMW as service techs and they were telling me yesterday that a lot of 2012 m3 are having huge motor problems (engine blowing) has anyone else heard about this. I didn\'t believe it for second. I couldn\'t imagine that a BMW in its finals years of production could have a major problem like this. If anyone can concur on this info would be great.

It's not just the 2012s all m3s have had problems with their engines blowing up.

Mine's going back to the dealer for blowing up yet again...sigh

In my experience and knowing/talking with other M3 owners, the general perception is that all MYs have a lot of problems. I believe that line of thinking is stemmed from forums like these as the majority of posts are about problems only. In general the car is very reliable.

This is like that old saying about how if someone has a good experience, they will tell three people about it but if they have a bad experience, they will tell twelve. I hope you are right! *touch wood*

I know its still probably a minority and at first I thought this was a few isolated incidents but more threads are popping up like this. Is this legit concern in comparison to the early s54 type problems? Or is this out of the norm for any other bmw/M engine?

Doesn't necessarily "scare" me since I will be under warrant but I am a bit surprised as going into buying this car I thought the concencus was that this engine was "bullet proof"

In the three.5 years I've owned my M3, the worst problems I've had are putting in more oil (so. much. work.), four (yes 4) flat tires, a burnt out tail light, and premature wearing on the outer drivers side bolster and steering wheel trim, but there are worse premature problems to have. I've only met one person in this time period that's had an engine problem, and that was back in 2008, but then again, I don't get out much.

Didn't emissions rules/regulations change for 2012. More smog equipment perhaps the cause?
That's if this is even true.

Never seen a engine blow yet. I know there are some on this forum. I've seen 1 with noise from crank bearings but it was a 08. That was the only one.... And I see more bmws than just about everybody.

My HPFP died again

... seriously have enough MY2012 M3's been sold to even note any kind of trend at a single dealership? If a trend is going to emerge first it'll be on forums like this where owners from all over the world congregate.

There's quite a few 2011-12 (and earlier, but talking new cars here) M3's that have bad main bearings in which the bearings and crankshaft end up getting replaced (rebuilt motor). Mine was one of them and there were at least 3-4 other M3's with the exact same issue at my local dealership. That's probably what they were talking about. There's a long thread about this issue already and I'm sure there are at least a few members who probably have this issue, but are not even aware of it. It's not something you'd ever notice unless you drive with your windows down often enough to hear it.

That sucks that this is happening. I suppose you gotta hope failure happens early and the warranty has it taken care of.

I heard at the dealership that MY12s have a higher incidence of girls what look like the one in the Matrix that was wearing the black leather wanting to blow our engines. This is obviously a terrible issue but those of us with one on order are just going to have to man up and deal with it as best we can. O.o

Yep...perfect saying for this. Obviously there will issues with some...it's mass production! Life's too short to worry about these things, just enjoy and deal with it as it happens.
