New Brake pads and Rotors
Hi Guys,
My car is due for a brake pads and rotor change soon. I drive an 08 e87 120d lci (177hp) and have travelled 120k by the previous owners all mostly mardi(central coast) to ryde for his work. My question is should I change the rotor and pads to an aftermarket or do I stick to genuine? My car have been chip to 240hp with 460nm@1750rpm, on my current pads and rotor it feels like the braking is not enough? My style of driving is on the occasion hard driving, not on tracks. Maybe it's because the pads are worn at the fronts as the rear pads have been change about 4000km ago by the previous owner. Rotors all round shows sign of wear as i can feel the edge is not flat. Apparently according to some, that I have to change the rotors same time with the pads but the rear have got a new pads on it. If I do go for aftermarket, what disc and pads are good? EBC, BENDIX, BREMBO (if it's worth it). From research the EBC looks good with slotted rotors and with redstuff pads? And it will cost me about 900aud after shipping from UK. Expensive? I can't get a solid figure from BMW genuine parts. Anyone got a rough figure? What ya think? Cheers Guys |

I've just put EBC greenstuff pads on my car, and although it's only been a couple days, they are getting stronger and stronger. They seem to have more bite than the OEM pads. I would give the redstuff a miss unless you're tracking the car.
Give Southern BM a call and they should be able to sort out rotors for you. I'm unsure if the performance (slotted/cross drilled) rotors are available for the 120d, but give Andrew a call and they'll point you in the right direction. Plus you might find that the price difference between them and overseas isn't as big as you think it would be.

I've only had the greenstuff pads in for a couple days and so far they seem ok. I've hardly pushed them though. If you believe the reviews on line, there are people who rave about greenstuff and there are those who wouldn't put them on a shopping trolley. So far, so good in my experience but I'll post more up once I've used them for a while.

I'd look at getting a set of Bendix Ultimates with stock rotors or slotted if you're really needing it. I don't know how you drive and I hope this doesn't come across as rude but it's a diesel! Yes I've driven the 120d, nice car but it's not going to be used as a rally car anytime soon.
Check out DBA's website if they make rotors for your car. If you do decide you want better pads I personally like race brakes RB74 pads. They were a fantastic pad for the wrx, and go great with dba's slotted rotors. You don't have to change rotors when you change pads, just have their thickness checked to ensure they're still ok. Almost every brake place would do this "safety" check for free. |

I can tell you the 120D is under estimated especially when it's chip up. It's very zippy around city and love the low rpm cruise on highways . I'll check out bendix...I wont go over the limit in brakes like brembo but it's nice to know that the brakes really bite if it's needed :P |

I've been quoted by Toowoomba BMW just over $2k to replace front and rear rotors and pads + Labour.
I ended up getting Greenstuff pads and RDA rotors, cost me around $1000 from http://www.onautos.com.au/ I wanted Redstuff pads, but they don't make front redstuff pads anymore for the 130i, only rears. We've had EBC pads on both of our Mini's - the Cooper had Greenstuffs with the EBC/RDA Grooved & Dimpled rotors and the Cooper S has just gotten Redstuff's when the 130i got Greenstuffs. The Redstuff have better initial bite on the Cooper S than the old brakes, but aren't "grabby" the original brakes if you tapped the pedal would grab the rotor, it was very annoying as it was difficult to be smooth, the new pads don't grab, but have great bite even when cold even on the little Mini. If they make Redstuff's for the 120d, go for it, even Redstuffs on standard RDA rotors you'll notice a huge improvement. the OEM pads and rotors were expensive and not really worth it. Just remember that if you get a brake / tyre shop to install, (BMW wanted to charge me $800) to get the two brake sensors from BMW beforehand and supply them to the installers. I ended up getting the brake shop to install front and rear rotors, pads and my new Koni FSD's for $440. Toowoomba BMW wanted $1500 for the same thing. |

If you're interested, I'm about to do a swap-out of my 135i calipers and disks (front and rear). Car has 35k on it. I assume they fit on the E87 as well?

$1300 fitted (include Brake Fluid)- I cant reset the BC - for that you have to take it to dealer/Service Centre. $1150 Just Parts (2 Pairs of Rotors - Slotted Front and Slotted Rear Plus 2 Pairs of Rotors - front pads and rear pads) Braided Lines about $250 - a bit cheaper if you order with the whole kit |
