Question Is this the first 2012 1M ?

So,

I'm the guy who posted the thread about my 1M unveiling my dealer did for me last Saturday, the same day I had to leave. I ended up changing my travel plans to be able to make the little party. So off I went.

For the last week, I have been missing my 1M so much, since I only had 2 or 3 hours with it. The other night I went by the only BMW dealer that exists here in the city I'm staying in in southeastern Mexico and I thought I seen a red M3 through the dark windows in the show room. My girlfriend suggested we go back and check since she hasn't had the opportunity to see my car yet, and passing by the dealer during the day, I was sure what was sitting there was a VO 1M.

I went in to look at it. The first thing I seen walking in was the sign on the dash that says sold. I explained my situation, how I had just bought one, and was dying to see it, and spend time with it. The people there were very kind and let me take a few pics and explained it had been custom ordered months in advance by a gentlemen that lives a few hours from here. I am in the capital, after all. They said they were the closest BMW dealer to him and so he ordered it there. She also explained there were about 5 in Mexico city and 2 in Puebla.

Looking at the sign next to the car, a big giant 2012 popped up at me. This confused me. I explained that this must be wrong, because BMW hasn't made any 2012's yet, not even in Europe. I explained I could be wrong, because I had heard all the 1M's in the US were 2011 due to something with the emissions, and that I wasn't completely sure, other than the fact that I've never seen a 2012. She was confident it was a 2012 and said the factory order even shows it as a 2012.

My question to you 1M connoisseurs... is this really a 2012?

Check these photos. My apologies for the quality, but the only thing I had with me at the time was my girlfriend's blackberry.

If the owner is on here, congratulations. Your car is just as beautiful as I remember mine being last weekend.

You should have taken a picture of the VIN. That's the only way I can think of confirming its year.

she said the owner was coming to get it later today, but when I went by like 2 hours ago, it was still there. Maybe I'll go tomorrow and see if I can snap another photo. She pointed to that yellow text on the door when explaining the year, but I don't think it was the VIN. I didn't see that on my car, and I also seen something on the car that indicated it was shipped by BMW to Mexico, but I can't remember what.

I believe the VIN should be visible at the base of the windshield on the driver side.

The only thing I can think of is that emission laws vary from nation to nation. The N54 may not be as offensive to Mexico in 2012 as it will be to USA. So maybe they have decided to provide them with a "2012" model, which in reality is an exact replica of your car.

Right,

that's what i was explaining to my girlfriend. Even though I just bought this car, it's a 2011....not a 2012. But it's exactly the same car as the one they have there at the dealer.

I'll head down there tomorrow morning to see if it's still there and get the VIN. The yellow text I spoke of I think was on both sides of the car. How can you determine the year from the VIN alone ?

Also, looking at the spec sheet, it seems the warranty here is 3 years instead of the 4 in the US.

It's just a translation error. 2012 in Spanish means 2011 in English. Comprende?

Well, if you've seen a picture of the MY12 1 series, you'd know this isn't a 2012 1M :-)

I am getting my Black Sapphire 1M next week! I live in Peru and over there we only get a 2 year warranty (it sucks!!).
I am writing because I checked my VIN number and according to it, my 1M is a 2012 model if I am not mistaken.
My VIN: WBSUR9103CVS62752
If you see the 10th digit (model year) is a "C" which means 2012, since "B" was model year 2011 as far as I know.
Any thoughts??

As clived has said, the 2012 1 series looks absolutely nothing like the 1M whatsoever. There will be no such thing as a 2012my 1M. They are hardly going to carry on building cars using the old body/running gear when new shape (and totally different) 1s are about to go into production.

Wouldn't really make sense to have both in production would it?

Except they are still making 1 series coupes for 2012. After that it would make no sense, but by then (2013) they are supposed to be introducing the replacement (2 series).

Model years can be different for the same car. The Golf R for example, is a MY 2012 in Us and MY 2013 in Canada. Same car.

Mystery solved?

I think so. I think it really is a 2012. Just because the year is different doesn't mean the car can't be the same. I haven't gone by there, but if I do, I'll get a picture of the VIN to confirm it.

It seems like all the people on here in Mexico or Central / South America have 2012s thus far.

People there is no mystery....I already explained that they can label them differently depending on the market (place). Just like a few of them supposedly will get manufactured early 2012 for the European market, do you really believe those will be labeled 2011's? I'm quite sure they will be 2012's as well. The main reason they are labeled 2011's here is for compliance with emission laws, but by now, every other model has already skipped to the 2012my label.
