M3 Production Numbers Update - 100k cars? - No way

Getting any M3 production numbers has been very difficult. Either the figures are all 3ers, the time frame is very limited or something else. The Car and Driver four generations of M3 test finally gives us some approximate numbers.

Coupe: 24000
Sedan: 6700
Convertibles: 8900

Thus the total, half way though the fourth year of production is: 39600

Link.

I hope BMW made some worst case scenario plans that included a global economic downturn. All statements and indications (including my own personal estimates and bet) showed they would meet their goal of making 100,000 E9X M3s. Now we can see that they have virtually no chance of making that goal. The likely 6 year total will be between 65-70k cars. This figure falls short even of the E46 production figures.

Oh well, the company is doing fine, the E9X will be ever so slightly more rare and only a few inside BMW and a few of us will even know or care.

Look how well the E46 M3's have held their value. Just imagine the last generation of naturally aspirated cars with arguably the best engine and way less than 100k examples left. These things are gonna be gold. I haven't even started with this M4 thing and all that jazz that's gonna start next generation. Get 'em while they're hot.

In the back of my mind always hoped for this. Hoped I would get the last 4 door NA M ever (at least the NA part) and with that few made... Will keep this car forever, best purchase I've ever made, can't say enough about how much I love this car

Now the Z3 M Coupe I had was rare, something like 600 of them here, but cool that the M3 sedan will be fairly uncommon

Everything seems to look like the complete E9x M3 production run will be slightly less than 5-calendar (late 2007 outside USA, up to June 2012) years because of the poor sales...

We complain about the shared turbo motor in the F32 M3 when in fact that should keep its entry price semi-decent and stable for at least couple of years after its premiere. No more expensive, single-purpose, single-model engines in poor sellers...

I'm actually very glad that few people can really appreciate the E90 M3.

Makes it just that much more special when you see one. 9/10 M3's i see are coupes. Most people dont even know the M3 is made in sedan form. I seem to be getting that alot recently "ohh wow, i didnt know they made a sedan M3". in my head i say damn but its been out a while... ohh well, i remind myself that only 1/10000th of the worlds population even remotely cares.

If the pace remains the same, they should wrap it up with just under 60k M3 sales for the E9X generation.

Not sure if you saw that but the article is from Sep 2010. Numbers should be a bit better by now.

Best regards,

Now I can't help be curious how many (997) Porsche 911's are out there since that was the other car in my consideration. And it's a not so direct competitor.
