If you are experiencing grinding noise when turning

Just wanted to let yo guys know if after the 1200 miles service you are experiencing grinding noise when turning, have your dealership to change the diff fluid and add special additive.

We just had this problem right after the service was done.

Just FYI.

Aleks.

It's a 50/50 mix of dilithium and midiclorians. Does the job, make no mistake.

What sort of turning (wheel lock) is required?

Do you notice it whilst in motion or parking etc?

That's just silly and off topic, everybody knows that dilithium in its crystaline form can only be used in warp drive engines and it would be cruel to use sentient midiclorians in a diff.

Usually only on full lock when manoeuvring but mine is doing it at lesser amounts now too. You certainly won't miss it if your car is doing it. In tomorrow for them to look at it but the service advisor seemed to think the additive had already gone in at the 1200 mile service. May be interesting.

Does anyone know what the actual issue is? Why do some diffs do it and others not?

Its a common issue with C6 Corvettes. Had it done on my car twice. Chevrolet empties the old old and adds new fluid with a new friction modifier. The key is to properly distribute the new fluids throughout the assembly. This is done by doing figure 8's in a parking lot 10-20 times. It is done at a slow speed while turning the wheel lock to lock left and right. For those that dont do the 8's the 'fix' is seldom successful. Mines been perfect for over 3 years now after I learned the trick. Dont know if thats your issue but worth a try. Good luck.

Apparently manual transmission fluid is being used in the rear diff. If the noice comes up, they have to add friction modifier to make the diff slip which eliminates the noise.

There is actually SIB for it for you can have your SA to look it up.

Any idea on why BMW does not normally use this fluid unless you report a problem to them?

Because in business ( as much as we here may disagree) you dont fix ( and spend additional money)on what aint broke..

I would say in my opinion that the percentage of drivers that complain about this noise are those similar to the ones that frequent formus as this one, and are rather "enthusastic' drivers. hence the "procedure" for us types to keep us happy with the brand.

Mind you... there is nothing "wrong" with the diff if left un-modified.. it just chatters a bit.
