1M motor 'versus' Z4sdrive35is motor.....
One thing that puzzles me is this.
The engine in the 1M gets universal praise for its astonishing pace, sharp (for a turbo) throttle response etc etc in a way that the Z4sdrive35is never seems to have had to anywhere NEAR the same extent. Given that on paper/stat-wise it's the same engine, what gives??? Is it simply that BMW are underplaying the power and torque output of the unit in the 1M - as in claiming it's the same when it really isn't?? It would be REALLY illuminating to dyno both cars on the same dyno on the same day just to get to the bottom of this! Cheers to all, M1ke |

B/C of the 1M's M button. Throttle response is improved, making it 'feel' faster.
Having said that, it might have slightly different software... only one way to find out.. |

This is probably because Z4sdrive35is is quite possibly one of the stupidest model designations for a car.
1 Series M coupe comes close but at least we can shorten it to 1M. I really love the way the Z looks, but Jeebus! Who is hiring the marketing guys at BMW. On second thoughts, I'd rather have an awkwardly named car that's good to drive vs a nicely named card that's crap to drive.

An interesting question: From what it seems everyone has been told (including me by the dealership), the N54T motor in the 1M is only certified through the end of calendar year 2011 - Hence - no more 1Ms after that date. But - as some have suggested (I don't think any of us truly knows all the details), the 1M and the Z4sdrive35is basically share the same motor. Is the Z4sdrive35is going to be available after December 2011?

He is referring to the 2012, not 2011, and it was my understanding that the Z'is' was transferring to the n55 after 2011 as well. However I can't find any verification.
That isn't accurate. The Z'is' has overboost. M has only acknowledged that the piston rings are different and during the Toronto (?) Auto show something was mentioned about the delivery of the fuel in the cylinders was changed also. |

The enhanced engine management system of the BMW Z4 sDrive35is includes an electronically-controlled overboost function to briefly increase torque under full load from 332 lb-ft by another 37 lb-ft. This temporary torque peak of 369 lb-ft gives the car a significant increase in acceleration.

The Z4 is also like 200 lbs heavier. so yeah same engine won't feel as punchy with the extra mass.

Yup! I got an email from Leipzig Werk(a few weeks ago)... I asked about 1M production. They told me good news... the 1M will be produced until March, 2012. Then at the end of March, that is when F20 SOP (start of production) begins. BMW had planned the 1M production to end in Dec, 2011. So they gave us three more months of Joy! |
