Oil Catch Can Review - HPF vs BSH
I have been running the BSH catch can in my car for over 18 months. During that time I have put in 8+ track days, trip down to MFest and lots of spirited driving on the way to work! I keep reading in the forums that their are lots of folks that arent getting any oil collected in their cans, partly due to design and location. I can honestly say that I have NEVER had to empty my OCC and am amazed that for 18 months of being installed that less than a 1/4 cup of oil was in it. I did find that the hose connector had a leak and was blowing a small amount oil out before making it to the OCC, but still extremely disappointed with the results.
As many of you know, being local to HPF I decided to swap out my BSH OCC for the new HPF OCC. Now location being a limited factor is the same, and yes the heat from the turbos is less than ideal. The HPF can is constructed much differently and is the same design they use on their E46 M3 and has proven to be effective. First off the installation was a breeze...the longest part for me was converting everything back to OEM for the HPF tubing...it all just snaps right into place. I also liked the fact that the bottom half of the HPF OCC comes off, made it nice for installing the bracket and will come in handy when needing to empty. The quality and install ease where hands down better with the HPF OCC. Yes the HPF OCC is $$, but it is standard HPF quality which speaks for itself. So my test is going to be over the next month to see how much oil this can collects. I have a few track events at the end of July and mid August and will report back. So far, so good.

I also had a BSH (and sold it), and this HPF unit looks like a great OCC. However, I'd really like to know how restrictive it is. If it's anything like the other OCC's on the market, I'd rather just use my FMIC to catch the oil . That said, maybe HPF actually solved this problem and their OCC isn't creating positive pressure compared to stock, which would be great!

I have the BSH - traps zip. It desperately needs filtration material.
HPF, does it open up?

PM sent. OCC theory makes sense. The BSH was a waste of $$$ in my application and there are lots of design flaws of the can itself etc. Will report back after more usage of the HPF OCC

Any oil collected is a bonus though......would be interesting to know if what the BSH OCC collects is any different to the HPF......maybe that is all the oil there is to collect, who knows ?

exactly. The BSH connections are not as rugged and had some leaking around them so I imagine oil was getting lost there too.

I read this, what it seems the issue is, is not having a OCC but the fact that we need to verify that the CFM flow trough the OCC piping is enough not to restrict the design of the car, which could be very bad.
