Official M3 Drift Thread >> Lets See You Sideways!
I've seen a bunch of videos out there of people getting their M3s sideways and such.
In my opinion that's awesome, and drivers that can control their slides are talented. Personally it's my favorite thing to do in the M3 So post up some videos or pictures of you going sideways & show us all how it's done Here's a video before a set of new tires.

I have my new tires in my garage (conti DW) and just holding on putting them on trying to get a chance to drift some before I throw them away. Afraid I may not since my tires (rears) started showing the green line!! Will need to do it ASAP Will see
If I do I'll make sure to post a video.

Definitely. Look at the counter-steering work.

Can anyone tell me how to do this? I have a general understanding, but would like more specific knowledge:
1. what gear is best for this? 1 or 2? 2. what is the driver doing in the first video posted, redlining in gear? if not, holding steady in what gear and what RPMs? 3. I know you steer in the opposite direction that the car naturally wants to go when you're spinning wheels that hard. Anything else i need to know? DSC off obviously... I would love to do this on my first track day and get a picture with me pumping my fist out of the car. So classic!

1. Gear depends on how fast you want to go sideways (i.e. comfort factor). The one in the first video appears to be in 1st gear. 2. You don't want to redline it, in case at certain point you want to throttle a bit more since, throughout the drifts, you're modulating the throttle (listen to the engine sound in the first video - each time the engine roars, the driver is throttling. And, then lets off a bit, then throttles again (to push the car some more sideways)). On E9x M3, 5,500 to 7,000 rpm works well. 3. That's basically it, in a nutshell. Turn the steering wheel, throttle (or, drop the clutch, or clutch-kick, or pull the e-brake) to spin the tires & get the car sideways, then counter-steer. When things get too fast for comfort, one tends to let off on the throttle and that causes the rear tires to find grip, and then the car doesn't slide anymore. And, this is where all kinds of interesting things can happen, including hitting a curve.
