Has M dropped the ball?

Based on engine info and spec, I’m starting to get very nervous about the power on the new M3. I was expecting something out of this world and not just another car to fill the gap between the 335 and M5. I currently drive an M5 and to be quite honest it is a lovely car but compromised. Just the other day I was given a massive lesson by a CLS 63 in a strait line and when we got to the corners he was even faster. I ordered the M3 because of what I was expecting now it looks like I might just have to stick to the M5. The M3 must not just be better than the RS4 it MUST be much better with no debate, that’s what we waited for and expect! Is it possible that M have panicked and dropped the ball because of the RS4?? I hope BMW reads these comments, it took the "others" for ever to catch-up to the E46 now it looks like BMW is playing catch-up. Is it to soon to panic?

Unfortunately , overspeculating runs rampant on boards like this. I cannot wait to hear that engine wailing at 8000rpm +! Yeah, the torque is a little low, but you can't have high revs , high hp, and high torque in this price range.

most likely underrated but we will see how it does with other cars.

Maybe BMW will drop a big suprise and the new M3 will weigh just 3,245 pounds and as a result it will blow away anything the RS4 can dish out. Hey, I can dream can't I?

M cars have never been drag-kings (or queens ).

It's much more about M than drag-racing.

If you are buying M cars for pulling-off duels, you are buying in a wrong shop.

Power to weight!

Folks, don't panic. All is well in M land. It is about power to weight ratio more so than power. This car is going to have about 10% better power to weight than the RS4. This plus way less drivetrain loss will give it the acceleration. The 400-500 lb less weight will do wonders for the handling compared to RS4. RELAX!

Yeah, the ringtime is much more relevant. Was what that time again?

Just kidding. I'm really excited about this car.

The most important thing at BMW - and even more at M - is driving experience.

And the acceleration time is only one part of this driving experience, yet not the most important one.

M cars are multi-dimensional cars, not just one-dimensional: the whole package counts.

The engine info/spec pretty much on par with what have been rumored around the web, no big surprises. It is the entire M3 package that counts, wait until we drive one on the road before drawing conclusion.

numbers are as expected. I think weight savings are more than expected. This car will beat the RS4 and all other competitors no doubt in my mind.

Rock the RS4.....

given the publish spec of the engine, it is going to cream the RS4 in straightline and around a race track....

This friggin Atmospheric engine has the same damn torque curve as a turbo motor....how damn impressive is that?

Assuming they get the gearing right (7 speed hint hint)....the new M3 will be even faster than the E39 M5 which is faster than the RS4....

No worries now.....on the motor side. worried about weight and tranny.

Agree. I wouldn't worry too much. Considering the competition that BMW has virtually created all by themseleves, there is NO WAY they will bring out a car that does not produce.

I'm just worried for the RS 4 owners who just spent 68k on those bad boys. in about a year when the new M3 goes on sale, i can see the used RS4 prices fall like rain and flood the used market for the poor boys like me.

Any new stock AMG63 will most likely beat any new stock M car in a straight line with the amount of horsepower that they put down. I'm surpised about the twisties too though unless he tweaked his supsension.
