Registration of Car Battery for 2007 E60
My Dad has 2007 E60 with 35K. Looks like we need a new battery.
Our dealer quoted $600 for the install & part or $335 for just the part. Very expensive. We found GetBMWParts.com who sell it for $180 + shipping. So we are thinking that we can get it there and install ourselves. The installation doesn't look too difficult. And I read on this forum that they are a good dealer of BMW parts. But I keep hearing about that we need to register the battery to make it run correctly with the vehicle & some say they did it w/o registering. Can someone explain what registering does & what happens if you don't do it? I'm confused. We are pretty new to the German cars (We previsouly owned '86 Chevy Celebrity, '94 Honda Accord, '98 Honda Odyssey, '99 Chevy Tahoe, '01 Accura TL, '09 Honda Accord & now '07 BMW 530i). It's rather disappointing that the battery died at 4 years old & with less than 50K on it. Never happened to us on any of the prior cars we owned. But it is way more fun to drive. So I guess it's worth it. Thank you for any help you can provide. |

The system needs to know a new battery is being put in. If not the system still thinks it has a bad battery in it. Car will work fine for a while with out registering, then go out again. The real question is why the battery died? You need to run a diagnostic to see what modules aren't shutting down and draining the battery

Supposedly if you don't register the battery it wouldn't last as long. I've been driving on a non registered battery for more than a year, no problem so far. Lots of people in the 5 series forum drive with unregistered battery longer than I have without any problem also. Entirely up to you...

How do you register the battery
I just bought a 2008 535xi and the euro auto shop that I had do a prepurchas inspection did a very through job and they tell me that the car is going to be in need of a new battery soon because it seems to be low on charge. I have not noticed any signs of a low charge yet. It starts perfectly on the first try every time. they quoted me $350 to replace an register the battery. I am inclined to let it go until it has trouble starting as i drive mostly for fun just around town. It there any harm in doing that?
Secondly I have a lot of experience working on cars American, Japanese, and even an older BMW (1980 528). I am confident that I can chance the battery but can anyone tell me how to regisster it? Is it done through the iDrive? Thanks in advance! |

I installed mine last month and so far no probs. however, i notice that the a/c cuts down when it is being used and i never had that prob. before. You might want to install it yourself and then have the dealer register it for you. They will do it for about $100
