SCCA BSP theory

Once the level is BSP, and actual fender mods can happen, i wonder what size could truly fit then?

I'm wondering out loud because a proposal is out for comment that moves most of BSP down into a new class, but leaves the turbo BMWs behind, which is in effect an opinion being stated that the 135 is competitive with the EVO VIII and IX in that trim.

They can run about 400 wtq through 285s on the four corners. The Solstace GXP can do a 295/315 staggered and struggle with putting power down.

Can the 1 handle 295/315 and would it be able to deliver in an autocross setup with 315's? Would it need more, and can it even work?

Sounds kind of similar to the thought that 245 street rubber on each corner would be the same as 285 in the rear that STU has in theory set itself up for.

you can cut fenders in Street Prepared, so I don't see what rule you're waiting for. I'm sure the 135i will stay in BSP w/ the STevos. The new GSP looks great if you own an E36 M3.

Sorry, I probably didn't present this very well...

What i'm effectively talking about difference wise is going FROM STU to BSP, not waiting for this proposal or rules to change or anything like that.

I got into a discussion about BSP and the movement, and effectively solidified in my mind that SOMEONE should go all-in with a 1-series, but at the same time wondering if there is enough balanced rubber to lay down the power when tuning the car past 400wtq. I'm pretty sure the JB4 with BSP legal mods and race gas can get to 425 wtq, but even with cut fenders and 335's in back, then what rubber up front do you go with? after a certain point i'm not sure how much balance you are keeping with the car, but in theory a well sorted 315/30/18 square 135 sounds AWESOME. And maybe you keep with the "conservative" 400 wtq...

the car definitely has a better chance at being competitive on a national level in BSP than in STU.

Since neither has been done full tilt, and at least one national champion was *about* to go STU with one, i'm starting with the cheaper one

Makes perfect sense. Especially since most of it will carry over.

about to go STU and actually doing it are two completely different things

good luck.

The *about to* story went like this...

He went so far as to create the offset bushings for the front wishbones to get the extra camber available, put in catted downpipes and was ready to campaign this season when an awesome deal on an FP Boxster came up.

I guess i can see how going to an FP boxster might be a more lateral move from an SSM rx-7 as opposed to slumming it up on street tires

In any case, it would've been awesome to have a multi-multi time national champion put some serious established talent behind the wheel of our cars. Hopefully others will, or one of us just plain gets that good

I know who you are talking about. He picked up a 135i last year and did some STU prep on it including some ASTs. Last I heard was that he didn't think it would be competitive due to lack of ability to fit enough tire up front (second hand conversation that was had at 2010 nationals).

I didn't realize he changed his mind and was actually considering a serious run at it. Would be an odd choice for Erik.

Always feels weird talking about people in third person like this ...

But yeah, I'm not sure i want to have Erik quoting specific stuff suddenly on a forum when it was just an e-mail to me, so my paraphrasing is that the car wouldn't hold up in ProSolo due to launch but will be competitive in Solo.

Now I just need to get Myself to the skill to prove it, and hopefully sort the car out well.

if I can help (remotely) w/ you sorting the car, lmk.

Talk Erik into coaching you, or try and evolution school if you want to work on the driver. Any auto-x school is worth it. Money spent on driver will improve times more than any amount of money spent on the car.

Good Luck!!

Thus far I've had horrible luck with being busy on EVO weekends. Last year my approach was to get as many good-drivers as I could to co-drive the car, watch and learn and whatnot. I can hopefully do the same this year.

Right now, my hopefully unfounded fear is the 275/35 star specs got too cold over the winter. I bought them off a race shop at the Autobahn in Joliet, IL. They moved between locations at the track, and when i picked up the star specs (8/32 left, something like one or two 20 min sessions only on them. They looked barely scuffed in) they were still in the trailer outside their shop from the move. Might've been one week, possibly less, but might've been enough time to get a little colder than they like.
