Had this car for a month. Only 900 miles on them. Is this close enough to the sidewall to warrant a brand new tire?

That definitely can't be plugged. Your only hope is that it isn't as long as it may appear and didn't actually puncture and cause a leak (maybe you already know that it is leaking...??). If it's punctured then it's time for a new tire.

Ive been getting tire pressure warnings from within the car, so it probably is punctured. Im just hoping this wasnt malicious because this is coincidentally in the most perfect location.

New tire required for sure. If any shop says they can plug or patch it, they don't know what they're talking about.

I have had both rear tires get screws in them before 5k miles. $1000.00 in new tires and labor covered, though. My $800 tire insurance has already paid for itself and then some. So glad I got it.

Sigh. I had something similar happen last year. It sucks. Just replace the tire. You don't want to drive a high performance car with a compromised tire. If you had a Camry it might be different.

I bought a new tire...or ok I lied, I went on ebay.de and bought a used tire when mine got a screw in it.

However I got that tire plugged and I'm riding on it now ...and went to the track and did three laps lmao, so safe to say the tire is ok. The spare is in my garage, but that hole looks WAY to dangerous.

NEW TIRE.

too close to the sidewall, you'll probably have trouble finding a tire shop that's willing to plug that.

H2C is right you can't patch it. First off I don't ever recommend plugging a high performance tire, you need to patch it. In your case it is too close to the sidewall and you are going to end up getting a new tire. The good news is that since the tire only has 900 miles on it you only need 1 tire. If you had 5k miles on them (almost 1/3 to 1/2 the life of the tire) you would need 2 new tires.

Only good thing is when you replace it at least the pair will still be a pretty good match since they are not worn down.

The important consideration is where the nail punctured the INSIDE of the tire; that's what makes it patchable or not. For the looks of it, seems like the nail is actually pointing to the sidewall, which would be even worse for patching, but only after tire removal you can tell. If the nail is angled towards the center of the tire, I'm sure it could be permanently patched.

And with a little hole like that a tire will never explode or anything, but the reason a patch don't work on or near the sidewall is the normal sidewall flex would make the patch fail in short order. The good news is with TPMS is you'd be perfectly fine with a patched tire that fails even at triple digit speeds, just like if you got a new puncture. TPMS triggers at 30 psi, which gives you plenty of time to safely stop with a regular nail hole. I tried this with a patch kit at buck twenty, got TPMS light eventually, slowed down, pulled over a few miles ahead, and tire was at 30 psi. Couldn't feel any diffrerence in handling. TPMS is worth its weight in gold

. By the way, if you just air up a tire after the TPMS light, without turning engine off, you need to reset the system before taking off to remove the light.

By the way, I need to permanently fix my flat, but I'm afraid to get my PC wheels messed up more than when tires were mounted. And dismounting tires is always harder. And yes, this is the best shop around (Discount Tire), with good equipment. Oh well. Good day gang.

I just got a bigger looking nail in my tire, at almost the same spot as u. Just more to the right and a bit farther from the side wall. the nail seems to be pointing towards the sidewall though. No tire pressure warning, I just heard the nail everytime it touches the ground.

I bought tire and wheel insurance from BMW, but I bought new Tires (PS2's) and wheels. The tires are slightly wider than the stock ones. Do you guys think BMW will cover these tires to patch or replace?
