Has anybody done anything to quiet tire noise on an E92 M3?

Was thinking of trading the M for a Vette ('09 Z06 or '10 GS), but I like this car a lot better. Will take the risks after warranty. Whatever happens to it is going to cost less than what I'd have to shell out right now, with the exception of the engine, but if I get the dreaded bearing problem, I'd trade it in immediately. The idle valve might be covered by the emissions warranty, but am not sure (any ideas?).

Anyway, my main complain on this car is how noisy it is on road trips, especially when asphalt is less than smooth (typical of the desert southwest). I'd like to quiet it down a little. The material of choice to do that is closed-cell foam, not the a$$ heavy 'dynamat'. My question is what material to use, and where the heck to install it (and instructions, if possible ). Don't want to dismantle the car to do that, but I'm curious where exactly the noise is coming from, and the best way to quiet it down a bit. I remember 'dynamatting' the crap out of my ex GTO, and it hardly quieted the car down (hence the 'dynamat' comment above). I have the PS2 tires, by the way, which supposedly are relatively quiet. Read reviews of Contis DW as being quieter, but who knows how much, if at all. Thanks for your help folks.

You think the M3 is loud?

What until you drive the vette! You have no idea about noisy...

Have you considered running 18's?

PS2s can get pretty loud as they wear. If they're worn, you might consider replacing them with Contis. I remember the Contis being quieter on my e46.

They're about the same. The GS is a bit quieter, while the Z06 a bit louder.

They still look like new, so can't imagine how they're going to be as they wear. Was thinking about DWs, but man, I'm sure I can quiet the car for less than $1,400 . If somebody made ultra-high-performance all-season tires in 19 stock sizes, then I'd consider trading up.

Don't know where the 18" wheel quote went . I don't think it makes a difference; it's the tire tread, not the size.

Hey, I don't want to turn my M3 into a Lexus; just convert tire roar into tire noise . Guess nobody has done it, huh? Looks like I'll have to be the first too, just like with RP tranny oil. Oh well. Problem is I don't know how to tackle the job effectively. Might start with spraying rubber undercoating underneath the plastic fender wheel well covers behind the front wheels. Thanks anyway gang.

+1 The CSC3 seem to be a quieter tire than the PS2 in my experience. Tire choice makes a big difference in road noise. If you have EDC, you might try the damper settings. I find the comfort mode tends to be slightly quieter than the Normal or Sport settings.

From what I understand a good aftermarket exhaust wıll get rıd of any unwanted tıre noıse

Well, you could also try dıfferent tıres. Just from my own experıence, Hankook Ventus V12 tıres made a bıt of a dıfference wıth road noıse for me. You could check to see what tıres are out there and whıch ones offer less road noıse.

Have an M3 and a vette here and I don't think the vette is any quieter. The engine noise in the vette is louder possibly make it seem like tire noise is less. In any case, going to 18s might help a little because instead of a 35 series tire you'd be on a 40 series tire which makes it easier to find an all-season like you wanted.

I think you will find the M3 is one of the quietest performance cars you will find with regards to tire noise. If you can't handle the tire noise in the M3 maybe you should look into a less performance orientated car.

Looking at Tirerack surveys, tire noise is one of the values.
The Cont DW are the quietiest tires (9.1) vs the other tires including the PS2 (8.5).

You can drive NT-01's for a while to make any other tire seem quiet too.

I liked the add a loud exhaust comment.

New tires should solve the problem

I just replaced all tires on my 3, they had 28000 mi on them. The tire noise is not an issue any longer. Use the same OEM tire, bridgestone protenza re050ii. They've been pretty noisy the last 8000 mi or so.
