NO Heat shield on pipes on Aftermarket exhausts??
I noticed that many of the afermarket systems, axle back at least, be it akra, eis, whatever, dont have a heat shield on the pipes near the differential like how OEM does.
Is this going to cause an issue for the differential getting too hot over time if no shield is there?? Is it required to have this? how come the aftermkt companies dont add it on their systems? please chime in. thanks |

for street driving, probably not a whole lot of difference.
For driving at the track, yeah, but it's easier to add heat shields, many vendors do already |

ok...so i found this: http://www.thermotec.com/products/11...at-shield.html
would this above^^ be sufficient? i dont track my car....just city and highway driving...go WOT maybe twice a week.... But my concern is, would not having this cause slow damage over time to your differential or whatever else is near the pipes ?? |

It's not really the diff you have to worry about. It's the CV Boots. I also installed the heat shields listed above ^^

For M3s that see competitive/excessive track use, it's a good idea to install them to protect the CV boots.

I didn't have a heat shield for a couple of years, and I had no problems. However, I also added the heatshield mentioned above just in case.
Super easy, especially if you have access to a lift.

I've had the active exhaust for like 2 years now and I've done 2 track days pushing the car to the limit... Last time I checked the boots they looked fine... I'd be more worried about other things before I put heat shields... But it's not a bad idea... Maybe I'll do it before my next track day.

Look online, I got my set for cheaper than most people. Look in the DIY section, i put up the appropriate part numbers. If you aren't sure take a look at the thermo-tec website.

Why not use some exhaust wrap? BMW uses it on the GT4 (and maybe GTS as well?)
Are there concerns about the durability of the tape? Or something else?
