Thinking of cutting the dash

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=221953

http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=224057

Since the oem navigation is in the similar location, it be great for additional storage or a mount for GPS.. I do find my suction cup gps mount falls of sometimes and stuff.. this looks like a decent idea..

Box is like 65 bucks

Here's a nice detail thread

Definitely a cleaner look than sticking it on your windshield

It looks like the 1 has OE holes and clamp nuts for the screws to mount....you may have to come up with a mounting solution but this looks good.

too bad you can't retrofit the e82 navi system. i've said it before and i'll say it again, if i could, i would've ordered my z4 with NO navi. i'd prefer a simpler layout, less distraction on gizmos and more focus on the raw car feeling than have this outdated navigation system. my $200 garmin in my g35 is 10x better than the oem navi in our cars.

Yeah, but I HATE having to remove, hide, and mount the damn thing every time I want to use it + there's an ugly long power cable

I agree, but on my G35 - I hardwired the Garmin and it also has a front pocket like the 1-series so it's attached via velcro I just shut the pocket when I'm not using it. The only cable that "sticks out" despite being hardwired is the radar but it's barely noticeable.

right which is why i'm saying the garmin cable issue is not a problem in my g35, because just like what op is attempting, it too has a pocket. so as long as you hardwire everything, it should be fine.

The dash box is clean looking, but when up it looks like it would really get in the way of visibility. There's not a tremendous amount as it is. I guess if it doesn't work out you could get a replacement dash from a junk yard.

so long as it doesn't rattle and drive you insane like the OE one, looks like a good mod.

I would probably have to use those foam double sided tape.. it does look like the 1 series box might be a little too big.. I'll have to pop my vents out to do some measurement..

If this project goes off the rails, you are going to have one seriously de-valued Z4 on your hands.

As an alternative, I would suggest attaching your GPS unit to the underside of the HVAC control cluster - ie, just above the center console and the roof control panel ash tray area. My GPS came with a sticky pad that I placed there, and the suction cup attached to it. Its practically invisible.

As a second alternative, the plastic panel below the HVAC cluster is removable and only costs ten bucks or so. Why not modify that panel to inclue a GPS mount? If it doesn't work, the panel is easily and cheaply replaced.

I think the project is totally worth it. Just take it slow. I've seen several other's do similar projects, and they've all turned out fine.

This is giving me the itch to look back at "iPod Out" integration.
