iPhone works in a 2008 but not in a 2011.5???
I finally picked up an iPhone 4 the other day and the audio has been cutting off and throwing the radio back to FM AM. My car is a 2011.5 bare bones other than the iPod connection in the center console.
So I drive to the dealer and ask someone if they've heard of anything like this before. One of the salesmen walks out, tries out another Y connector which fails to correct the problem. He proceeds to tell me to buy a 3.5mm audio jack and connect both the audio jack and iPhone connector to the phone if I want it to work. Not happening. So I decided to try the BMW supplied Y cable on my friends 08 M3 which is fully optioned and it worked flawlessly. Doesn't cut out at all and charges the p hone as well. At this point I know it isn't my phone or the supplied Y cable. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do next? Thanks in advance. |

+1. 2011.5 uses the white USB cable that came with your iPhone. No audio or charging issues with mine using the Apple USB cable.

Was yours build on or after Sept 2010? If not then you need the Y cable. 2011.5 refers to cars with the COMBOX iDrive and built on or after Sept 2010.

Ah. Sorry thought you did. I'm not sure for non-iDrive cars.

Maybe you can get your dealer to order same cable as your friends Y cable.

My friends 2008 Y cable and my 2011.5 Y cable have the same part number. The only thing I can think of is the cars software hasn't been updated. I doubt that because I just had my 1200 service done and I HOPE they checked it lol.

I've 4 cables here and I'm going to step outside and all four. One of them is the cable that came with the phone and I have no clue where the other cables are from.....BRB

Ok......car was built 12/10
I tried every USB to iPhone cable I had in the house including the one that came with the phone and they all did the same thing. Pandora would play for a few seconds then pause itself and the radio would go back to FM radio. Eventually the radio wouldn't even recognize the iPhone at all regardless of how many times I swapped the cables. So as of now I'm convinced I don't need the OEM Y cable but there is something wrong with the vehicles iPod/Phone interface. P.S. I also tried an iPod touch I have and it did the same thing. Play for a few seconds then cut off and revert back to FM. |

So when that feature finally does become available will I be able to just update the software at the dealer or will I need a hardware change as well? Thanks a bunch gents. Last edited by Bx Tpr; 02-19-2011 at 11:32 PM.. |

As 2011.5 M3 is the my first BMW, I don't know for sure, but I would guess it due to the Y connector the fact that it gets audio from the AUX cable and uses the USB for charging and phone functions?
You can achieve the same thing by using a separate AUX cable, you just can't have the Y connector. |
