rear differential fan/cooler?
It might have always been like this but started noticing recently (i searched but found nothing here or google) that sometimes (I assume after a more spirited drive) when I pull into the garage and turn off the car, I can hear a little whirring noise much like a fan of some sort coming from the rear (differential) area. I apologize in advance if this is an ignorant question but do our cars come equipped with a cooler/fan that is meant to stay running past shut off? It turns off after a few minutes of being parked.

It's not the diff, it is in your trunk under the carpeted floor. It's a module of some sort. Others may know more about what it does specifically.

Good guesses folks . It can be 2 things: the amplifier fan, which is in the trunk area indeed, and/or the transmission cooler pump, which is probably what you heard, since it's a bit louder. And yes, many things run on this car after shutting it off, some for about 10 minutes (iDrive). And it also starts every time you open a door or trunk, or walk by the car with the key in range.
Oh, and forgot to comment the differential 'cooler' is just an aluminum heatsink attached to the bottom, which is what you see if you peek under the rear bumper. Last edited by JCtx; 02-04-2011 at 12:25 PM.. |
