Tool Question....

I don't have a set of the following socket or specialty tools and don't know the name of them.

It looks like a male torx bolt. Not a female (recessed) spline/torx bolt head but a male ... I think it's like what is on the exhaust system.

If I explained that properly, what are they called.

What you're describing sounds like an external torx.

I think so too.

I went to a bunch of tool sites but did not find anything that really looked like an external torx. I finally went to McMaster-Car and they have them....

I may be pulling off the exhaust to do some measurements for a project... I want the proper tool for the job.

If I remember correctly, starter removal requires an external torx socket. I may pick up a set as well.

You can find them at most of the McParts stores too, I think I bought mine at AutoZone or Oreillys with a lifetime warranty.

Excuse me as I am not normally a Nitpicker on a car forum, but the politically correct adjective for this Torx tool is internal/external rather than male/female.

I bought this 35 piece torx bit set on Amazon. Works for me. I'll probably never need to buy another torx tool again.

http://www.amazon.com/Neiko-35-Piece...5888999&sr=8-7

They have both the male torx bits (normal & tamperproof), and the female torx sockets.

Bought mine (E-Torx) at harbor freight. The sizes on the Z4 are limited so a 35 piece kit is overkill. I think I paid like 10.00 for a set of ten and I have been able to do all the work on the Z4 and my E34.

I have a set of these:
http://www.harborfreight.com/4-piece...set-65680.html

And the matching sockets which I cannot find on the site but they have them all the time at the local store. Also a good 12pt socket can be used once the torque is broken or even to loosen them, just be carefull.

This tool was just plain funny....

Probably. Although between the Z4 and the wife's Jetta, I use the torx stuff often. It's nice to know I will probably never need to buy anything torx again and I'm hopefully set for life.

Just picked up the JET Tool set - similar to Craftsman. $15.00.
