AFE, Macht Schnell or BMC are all great.

Take a look at AA's new "Green Filter." It looks to have the best overall build quality.

I recently ordered a BMC and returned it after confirming what you stated in another thread regarding the media. Too thin for my comfort.

Not really.
The afe oiled units will be the lowest layer count, with only 5 layers. These particular filters have a very soft polyurethane lid that can distort with the pressure of the airbox centering pin, possibly creating a leak in the seal. Green is a bit cryptic on their site - stating only 2 layers. The BMC uses a 3 layer count. The Macht Schnell Performance filters have a eight layer count for maximum filtering ability. In the end, regular cleaning intervals will keep dust/dirt from entering your engine.

The "best" filter is subjective.
It all depends on your price point and desired end result ( best filtration or best flow ). More layers doesn't necessarily = better. You also have to take into account the filter media type and the way the filter media is layered on top of each other. Most oiled cotton gauze filters such as K&N utilize layers in a "stacked" fashion whereas AFE differentiates their filters by layering theirs using a "progressive" method. To put it simply, progressively layered filter elements leave less "dead space" in the filter media, which would drop overall filtration efficiency. I personally prefer the "dry" filter elements due to less maintenance (no need for reoiling kits) and superior filtration. For more information on pros/cons of each type of filter media, please reference the filter technical / comparison thread here. |
