Im sorry but I have a very hard time believing the results of that video, the increased drag from the wing alone pretty much cancels out the power mods... and the 3.91 rear gear is only slightly greater than the m3's 3.85.

Something isn't being accounted for. At the best case the mz4 has a pw/weight ratio of 11.2:1 (3200lbs/285whp), the m3 at worst case has pw/weight ratio of 11.1:1 (3700lbs/335whp). Gearing is very similar and if anything the m3 has the aero advantage.

In any case, I'd love to ask the owner of both cars about what exactly happened.

I figure with a more modified Z4M it's do-able, but not with that specific Z4M with those mods.

He is... he car has more then what is listed. Recaros is something else he has which would drop a couple pounds. This result doesn't suprise me much... if the M3 guy is not a fast shifter then I can see him pulling a bit. The guy in the mcoupe can drive so I don't doubt his shifting skills. Based off the very close power to weight ratios I can see just the shifting making a difference. If the M3 was DCT then forget about it he would have pulled on the mcoupe no problem. The DCT is much faster in a striaght line. If the weather wasnt so crap in the east I would just toss my brother in the M3 and me in my coupe and film it to settle the debate.

Honestly though, straight line pull like this, I think the average Joe is enough for a fair race in terms of shifting speeds...
I mean, you'd seriously have to be some high level sort of tard to eff up a straight-line rolling "race"
